Book Update – Goodbye Roanoke

71b765a1-a3a3-4f9c-91c2-2964c724876e~209x325
Drekenix short

Blurb:

What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke? Jodina knows that she should be embarrassed, but really… they had it coming. As a Vampire/Dragon hybred, Jodina has lived for more than 200 years avoiding humans and supernatural creatures alike. But one accidental fire – hey, her Dragon side can be a bit testy – and she finds herself locked up with a handsome Vampire and a few innocent children. Their crimes? Well, the mob outside their cell has decided that they are unclean abominations… Jealousy and fear, with a heaping dose of hate, can turn human beings into deadly creatures.

Jodina is another Character that has been running around my head… and as her full length novel isn’t ready to be released, I thought I would go ahead and get one of her short stories out in eBook format…

Excerpt:

“Let me out of this bloody hole, you rat bastards. Or I will burn this place to the ground. Now… open this door!” Jodina’s voice came out flat, barely bouncing off the dirt walls of her cell. If you could call a hole in the side of a small hillside a cell. It was more like a mausoleum with metal bars blocking the only exit.

“This is not right. What if she is clean?” A young boy, of perhaps fifteen years, turned to the incompetent oaf by his side, and pleaded.

Jodina watched, as the lad hunched his shoulders, and crossed his arms protectively around his chest. His words had pulled her gaze down to her filthy state of undress. “At least, supply me with some form of clothing. Or perhaps you enjoy watching women freeze to death.”

The oaf pushed the younger man out of his way, so that he could have a clear shot at her chest. His sword came for her with blinding quickness, as he thrust forward with experienced precision. A precision that would have impaled her heart. She couldn’t help but be impressed. Who knew the middle aged and overweight could move with such purpose and ease.

Jodina moved with a swift jerk to the side that saved her life, drawing a gasp of shock from both of her jailers.

A cocky grin spreading across his face, the oaf replaced his weapon. “See, lad? She is as unclean as her fellow prisoners. Be glad that she is as weak as the woman she pretends to be.” Placing his thumbs in his belt and thrusting his amazing girth outward like a working girl showing off her assets, the oaf hissed, “Perhaps you can save the sun a little work. Your fire trick can keep you warm, and hopefully keep you safe.”

EXCERPT FROM THE MATING CHALLENGE BY BONNIE VANAK

The two nude alpha werewolves fought to be the most dominant, the one to mate and breed with the female leader of the Blakemore pack.

Sounds of flesh smacking hard flesh echoed through the ballroom of the Blakemore Ranch as Richard Armador and Aiden Mitchell battled on the elegant parquet floor. Overhead two lead crystal chandeliers spilled golden light upon the sparring males.

As dictated by law, the men had removed their clothing to fight naked, to show they had no concealed weapons. The female alpha had the right to see the merchandise, so to speak. See exactly how much power and strength she’d be taking into her bed.

Perched on a gilded throne, Nia Blakemore watched the men fight. In this arena of blood and violence, hardened Lupine alpha warriors battled to lay claim to the female alpha’s lands, her pack, and her body. She felt like a tightly coiled spring, ready to snap with tension.

Alpha males from eight packs had been formally invited. Now the strongest two males remained. Of course one was Aiden. The fiend had been chasing her for years, warning her he’d eventually catch her and make her his.

He’d bought the mortgage on her ranch to force her into declaring this challenge. Bastard. If she hadn’t hosted the challenge, he could have foreclosed on her property.

And yet, as arrogant as Mitchell was, he still turned her on. Especially now.

Nia’s heart raced as the two men fought. She was their prize, and the males fought in the most primitive of ancient Lupine rites. Then the guilt set in. Neither realized her big secret.

They thought she was Nikita, the rightful alpha of the Blakemore pack. The males who wanted her didn’t know she was Nia, the younger twin, the one who’d assumed her sister’s identity from infancy.

Her admiring gaze swept over Aiden as the alphas drew close to the throne and Aiden punched his rival. Sweat dampened his thick black hair, slicked his hard body and droplets clung to the dark hairs of his chest. His skin was golden and tanned, gleaming beneath the light of the twin crystal chandeliers. As fine as smooth, chiseled marble, his powerful body flexed as he danced around his opponent. The taut globes of his ass came into view as he spun around, using his long legs to kick Richard and throw him off balance.

The males were driven by the instinctive need to mate and breed. It was basic biology, the dominating male werewolf’s drive to spread his seed and sire offspring to rule after him. In this rugged region of Montana, male werewolves outnumbered females. The Blakemore pack with its abundance of unmated and fertile females was a prize for these two virile males to claim.

But first, she had to make sure the boys played by the rules.

Nia’s sharpened gaze swept the assembled werewolves. A scowling Lupine in a green silk shirt leaned against a faded tapestry. Her eyes narrowed. Definitely hiding something behind his back.

Nia removed the honed dagger hanging from the diamond-studded belt on her white velvet robes. The fight took the males closer to the crowd hovering by the west wall. Aiden punched Richard hard, sending the alpha male crashing down. As the leader of the Mitchell pack leaned over his opponent, Silk Shirt detached from the wall and raised his hand.

Light caressed the gleaming steel blade he held over Aiden.

She stood and flung her dagger. It sailed through the air and sank deep into Silk Shirt’s wrist, pinning him to the wall. He screamed and dropped the switchblade.

She’d taught herself that move years ago, perfecting it to protect the pack females from lusty males.

Richard stood, wiping blood streaming into his eyes. He growled at the offender, snapped his fingers. Two males rushed forward to obey.

“Bring him outside and guard him. He’ll be dealt with later,” he ordered. “He knew the rules. No weapons. No assistance from pack.”

Silk Shirt whimpered as Richard’s men pulled the dagger from his wrist and lifted him under the arms.

“Wait,” Aiden ordered.

He took Nia’s blade. The dagger arced, slicing the air and then the male’s throat. As the werewolf burbled his last gasp, Aiden used the dying man’s shirt to wipe the blade clean.

No mercy on those ruthless features as Aiden twirled the blade.

“Dealt with,” he said.

Inside, Nia shivered at his ruthlessness, though she agreed with the action. Werewolves battling for power in this brutal challenge searched for any display of weakness. Aiden couldn’t ignore such a blatant insult by Richard’s pack. Nia returned to the throne and smoothed out her expression to show no trace of emotion. Nothing to incite the 200 plus assembled males from both packs to disregard the rules and engage in an all-out war they couldn’t afford.

The Blakemore pack could barely defend themselves, a fact Nia had desperately hidden. They needed strong males to help protect their territory. And they were all going hungry, for the ranch had lost too much income in the past year. Even game in their forest was scarce.

The fighting males thought they would win the Blakemore alpha female as a mate, the entire Blakemore pack to call their own, and the Blakemore Ranch as a nice bonus.

They didn’t realize she wasn’t an alpha female, there were only females left in the Blakemore pack, and the ranch was stricken with disease that killed all males of shapeshifting age.

Nia drew in a trembling breath, hoping the fight would end soon. The longer all these males remained on her land, the more nervous she became. Hurry up and finish. Then, please, go home and stay safe. This place is cursed.

Roxanne Valmont, the Blakemore pack beta, retrieved the dagger as Richard’s men rushed the dead werewolf outside. Aiden nodded to Nia, touching his forehead in a gesture of respect, then resumed the battle with Richard.

Nia didn’t know how the hell they’d resolve this mess. After she and her twin were born 25 years ago, their father had insisted there was only one living girl born to the Blakemore alpha pair. Nikita had been hidden, for it was prophesied in their family that the eldest girl twin born on the seventh day of the seventh month belonged to the Silver Wizard. He would come for her after she lived 25 years, and take her to his home in Tir Na-nog, the afterworld, to become his bride. And she would die, for no mortal being survived in the afterworld.

The twins had traded places to let Nikita out once in a while, but only their aunt Mandy, close friend Roxanne and a few elder females in the pack realized they were twins.

It was an effective ruse they’d managed to pull off up until now.

Nia gripped the armrests as Aiden moved on the floor, his actions smooth and flowing as he ducked Richard’s punch. Richard was smooth arrogance, a blond charmer who came from wealth and privilege. Adding his lands to theirs would make his domain even more powerful.

Sex with him would be bland and dutiful. Safe.

Not so with dark-haired Aiden, with his wide shoulders and heavily-muscled body. Raw and untamed, he fought as if the idea of bedding her drove him to a mating frenzy. Sweat dripped down his temples as he slammed Richard against the wall.

A very female part of her appreciated the flex of powerful biceps, the thick muscles dividing his back. Not an ounce of fat on him, not on the ripped abdomen, the narrow hips or his strong limbs.

Her gaze darted down to the thick thatch of black hair at his groin. At rest, his penis was impressive. Big, like Aiden himself. The thought of taking all that male hardness into her untried body, feeling him move over her as they consummated their union…

The flush of arousal filled her as she watched the powerful werewolf fight. She’d fantasized about the male in the dark night, wondering what he’d be like as a lover.

Aiden fought for her sister’s hand, not hers. He fought to mate with the alpha of the Blakemore pack and technically, her older twin was the alpha.

I am pretending to be someone I am not. A leader, an alpha like he is. My whole life has been based upon a lie to keep Niki hidden.

But after masquerading as her twin for all these years, she wished someone could see her for herself. Love her as an individual, not as the Lupine they knew as Nikita Blakemore.

The grunts and groans of the two sparring males echoed through the ballroom. Her peripheral vision caught sight of her aunt Mandy entering the ballroom. Nia’s heart pounded hard with every click of Mandy’s boot heels across the parquet floor.

Upon reaching the throne, Mandy whispered into her ear. Nia stiffened.

“Now?” Nia asked.

Mandy nodded at the fighting men. “Now, before the fight is finished and one of them wins.”

She released a sharp breath and followed her aunt out of the ballroom, away from the crescendo of male grunts and the crack of a fist slamming into muscle. Razor sharp fear surged. She wasn’t certain how much longer she and her twin could carry on this ruse.

Things had dragged on far too long. And soon, she would have to pay the price.

Get Beta’ed… muhahaha

Okay… fingers crossed, my first contemporary romance is in the hands of a Beta Reader… while I am still looking for a few more, I am cringing on the inside… I don’t think this process will ever get any easier… my baby is out there in the hands of a stranger…. okay, not a stranger exactly… the first person to accept the challenge of beta reading my first Skymann novel has gone through this process with me before… and she did a wonderful job on Shocking Finds: a Finder’s Keepers Novel…

so maybe I will get through this without chewing on my lip until it bleeds… it really is too bad that I’m not a nail biter, but ewwww…. I have never been able to stand that habit, in myself or in others… lol… mom is a notorious nail biter… but I once saw her keep at it until she ended up with an inflamed infection puffing and oozing around her nail… yeah… that is not the type of thing you un-see…

Now… I need to get a few pieces of swag ready for tomorrow’s signing… Info HERE… it may only be a local signing but you never know… 😛

Paranormal Romance… one of my all time favorite genres… and not just because it is the genre I write the most…

25ea6471cfdc1d807ff46752cbc53598

ooo… makes me want to go write up my next story… but as much as I love the Paranormal/Fantasy, there is a contemporary romance that needs my attention… so the question becomes, which should I focus on next… my third book in the Finder’s Keepers series, or the first in my Skymann Family series… I just can’t make up my mind, but reading Lisa Ann’s blurb makes me want to head back into the Finder’s Keepers… I am just soo addicted to all things magical… thanks Lias Ann for sharing your latest Paranormal news… woo who…

Anthology Update

792a5d3eada28a45d47c63dc5677ef73

very excited… it is official… my published works now number 2 shorts/in anthologies and 1 full length novel… that is three stories from the Finder’s Keepers world… and Feb 13 I am off to a signing for anyone near the tri-state area… (ky/wv/oh) … all those from the local writer’s group will be sitting down for a signing at the South Shore Library… just follow rt23 and watch for the library building with the green roof… 😛

hopefully, after the signing I will have more information about buy links and a picture of the cover… I do know that my short story was a wee bit long, which caused my fellow writer (Cathy) to need to shorten it a little… she had to cut out some of the less important bits… still… it is an excellent way to learn more about Joffrey, a Sentinel… Joffrey has a bigger part in book two of the Finder’s Keepers series… Southern Discoveries (and yes, I hope I am done messing with my title… lol)

Phoenix tracks

okay… I am laughing so hard, I’m afraid there may be tears in my eyes… lol… but this GIF (as funny as it is) is not the point of this post… sorry… I just can’t stop watching it…

I am actually posting to give a shout out to Yasmine Phoenix… about a year or so ago, she did a post with a handful of authors in various stages of their wordage lives… the hopeful, the multi-published, and those in between… and every once in a while she sends us some questions, a type of update… to see where we are in our writing journeys…

now, my memory is lacking on the best of days, but I am pretty sure that this is the third post that Yasmine has done on the topic… if you want to check out her post, just follow the link below….

Yasmine Phoenix’s Blog Post

I have done a little more than when I answered Yasmine’s questions, but you can still check out her other questions… both to me, and the others in the group

Free Friday

Since there are five Fridays this month, I thought I would do a writing Prompt… hmmm…

2cf422e5c80aca6ea1b5cd142efc12a8

lol… I love this

I found this gif on pinterest, but I actually had a dog that ran into his reflection once… he ran into the room and came flat face to flat face with the dog in the mirror that was propped up against the wall… I can’t remember why the mirror was off the wall… It is Spike’s reaction that I remember… lol…

unlike the little guy up at the top of the post, Spike freaked out… he screeched and fell over backward… but he kept doing it… we ended up leaving the mirror on the floor so we could watch the poor dog run back and forth like he was going out of his mind… lol…

Now… the writing prompt is to write a scene with either a child or animal, or hey… a visitor from another realm, one unused to reflective images with no other purpose than to show your reflection… how would your character react???

Just a quick up date… I decided to give a few online book clubs a try… I decided to go with #RRBC Rave Reviews Book Club, and OnlineBookClub.org  … it has only been a few days, but I have already meet some lovely people… Writers & Readers alike… 😛

Michelle Abbott from over at #RRBC even introduced me to a blog hop that I will be doing in the months of Feb and March… if you see #EggcerptExchange in the subject line, you will know that my usual dose of insanity will be coupled with the introduction of an author I have meet while hopping around… Annnndddd …

In the book front, I have some good news/ bad news… (well for me, not so much everyone else) I realized that the title Twin Findings would be perfect for book three of the Finder’s Keepers series… which means I now have to decide on another purrrrfect title for book two… grr….

Author Love/ Anne E Johnson

Howdy… okay… so I am all about it when it comes to supporting my fellow writers… but is this is even better than mere support… pivotal even… muhahahaha… parents this is your chance to prepare the next generation… it is your responsibility to brainwash the young’uns into loving paranormal and fantasy… yep… it is a must…

Okay… I’m done being silly… but truthfully… there were some of my favorites (these types of stories) when I was a kid… mamaw would always read to me (dyslexic here… I so wasn’t doing it myself) she had all the Disney classics, bible stories for kids, and ghost stories… if I had a little one, I would definitely read these stories for him/her at night… it is one of my favorite childhood memories…

THE CRUSTY-HEARTED MAN
(Excerpt from Story No. 15 in Things from Other Worlds)

Outside our town, a few miles from where Jimbo’s gas station used to be, an old man lived all by himself. Everybody knew he was there, but nobody actually knew him. He’d show up a few times a year to buy canned goods at Ruth & Bobby’s, but that was it. Not a soul, not even the oldest soul in town, could remember a time when that man hadn’t been around. He must have been two hundred years old. Some said more like three hundred.

Truth was, he’d been out of touch with people for so long that nobody could remember his name.

He couldn’t even remember his own name. Folks said that a crust had grown over his heart.
The heart’s a funny organ, though. It’s tougher than you’d think, and can survive through pretty much anything. It’s like a tulip bulb. No matter how icy and long the winter is, that little bulb stays alive under the frozen ground until it’s time to shoot up a new sprout, green and full of life.

But for some especially frosty people, there’s rarely enough sunshine to wake up their hearts. It takes something spectacular, maybe even something from another world. I’ll tell you what happened to this old, old man, and you’ll see what I mean.

Nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. Flies and grubs and spiders occasionally tiptoed into the walls of his house, but most were never heard from again. The younger raccoons and rabbits only touched his front stoop on a dare because their parents warned them not to.

“Get away!” the old man would scream hoarsely while shaking a frying pan above his head.

Every living creature, from human on down to bedbug, knew enough to keep off the old man’s property. But that knowledge had not been broadcast across space. So, when an alien landed in a clearing in the woods one late winter afternoon, it didn’t realize what it was up against. It was scared and a little woozy after a rough landing, although it wasn’t afraid. It had been brought up to assume that all beings will do right by each other when given the chance. Poor little thing.

I bet you think an alien is a spindly sort that looks like it’s made of green plastic. Well, not this one. It was furry. Oh, so furry. Picture fur as thick as a polar bear’s and as soft as a mink’s. Now double how thick and soft it is. Now color it blue-green. This deep, soft, dark fur was all over its body, which was short and wide. The alien, standing, came up just past your knees, but was too wide to get your arms around.

It had two giant tangerine-orange toenails on each of its four feet. Its eyes, too, were the color of tangerines, but twice as big. They were very close together in its head, and surrounded by fur, giving it a very intense look. Your average human would probably describe this alien as “the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” and make a sound that went something like “Awwww.”

Well, this little alien was in need of shelter and food. It didn’t know the plants and animals of our planet, so it shuffled right by some perfectly edible berries and nuts. But it recognized a building when it saw one. And so it approached the old man’s house in the middle of the woods, with hope in its heart but nothing in its belly.

“MMMnnnyonggg,” it called out from the yard. Nothing stirred in the house, but several woodchucks and foxes gathered to watch from a safe distance. The alien trundled up the front steps. Once it caught its fur on the rotting wood, but freed itself like a real trooper.
Inside the house, the old man heard a nasal howl.

“MMMnnnyonggg!”

He assumed it was a wolf or an injured bear. “Durn thing’s up on the porch,” said the crusty-hearted man as he pulled his frying pan down from its nail. “I’ll teach ʼem whose house this is.”

The old man shoved the front door open so hard it smacked against the rotten siding. A few shingles crumbled and fell. The woodland creatures watching the show skittered deeper into the shadows, fearing what would come next.

But the alien didn’t move. It didn’t know it was supposed to be afraid of the sound of wood smacking wood, or the sight of a two-legged earthling holding a round metal object. It assumed this was either a way to say “hello,” or else a communication device telling the whole planet about its arrival. Those were the only options that made sense to the alien. Widening its eyes and puffing up its fur, it tried to look as friendly as possible.

For his part, the old man was so puzzled that he forgot to swing the pan. “You’re not a bear,” he accused the blue-green furry thing. “You’re sure not a wolf. What are you? Gorilla?”

The alien didn’t know what the word “gorilla” meant, but it enjoyed the sound, so it waddled a little closer to the cool-talking human.

“GGgggrrrrill,” said the alien, trying to fit in.

The old man just snorted and slammed the door, leaving the alien alone on the porch.

Blog Hop Site

what’s on your mantel

I have two book on my mantel… and soon there will be three… I have been told that the anthology written by the people from those in the local writing group will be published in Feb… Hopefully I will have more information for you after the meeting on Saturday…

To tell the truth, I had given up hope on this day ever coming… but that is mostly because I am an impatient gal…  😛 this idea was started back in 2014, then the RWA issue with the smaller groups like the one in this area disbanding… while the others in the group decided to start their own writing group, I stayed home and focused on online promotion and editing (and the ever present MS)

But now that Book two of the Finder’s Keepers series is getting closer, one edit at a time, I realized that the story I had submitted to the group needed to be told before Book Two, Twin Findings, came out… I mean… it isn’t a life or death issue, but the main characters from the story have a lot to say in Twin Findings…. Joffrey (the last Sentinel remaining Earth-side) and his lady love, Sophia Ann…

this could be Makayla

4ba9c099c5fc608d6dcd492486e50d58

this could sooo be Makayla LaPine… she only had a few lines in Shocking Finds: A Finder’s Keepers Novel, but she is making her mark in book two… Twin Findings…

this picture is definitely worth a thousand words when it comes to Makayla’s younger days… she tells us all about her younger days as she sits with Marin, going through the details of the day her twin went missing… poor Makayla… so young, so sad, and oh so strong… stronger than she should have had to be… our sexy southern bell has a few crack in the shield she presents the world, but the woman will always be sassy and strong when the end of the day comes out to play…

I can’t wait until you guys get to read this book… between the continuation of Marin’s story, and this peek into Makayla, this book is gonna rock… happy wordage everyone… tracey

still time for free reads

sdfghjkl

there is still time to win free books and prizes from GWP for those of you that didn’t win the Christmas mystery box… head HERE to find out more… happy wordage…

Finder’s Keepers Series…

51n5v9khhel-_sx331_bo1204203200_1

I will do my best to give book updates ever first week of the month…

As of right now, Book Two in the Finder’s Keepers series is almost ready for beta readers… very exciting, but first I would like to have another look through… woo who … and I am vacillating between two titles.. Twin Finds or Doubled Findings… but that could all change… 😛

Check out Vivian Lane

Vivian Lane was kind enough to stop by and answer a few author interview questions for us… so sit back and learn a little more about Vivian… and get ready for Protector, out the first of the year…

1. Do you have a favorite book baby?
A future Agent Seven book that hasn’t been released, yet. Writing it got me through some tough times. When nothing else was coming to me, I could work on that.
2. Which series flows so much easier that you find yourself telling the voices that they must give the other series some air time?
Well, the first drafts of several Children of Ossiria stories have been written a long time and publishing them in 2016 is my priority.
3.Do you have any writing quirks that you are willing to share? (like I have a tendency to write long hand then move to the computer, just something that frees your mind to think and connect the dots)
I need quiet to write. The quiet hum of my computer or the AC is fine, but anything else is totally distracting, which means much of my writing has happened in the middle of the night. I’ve lived more vampire hours as a writer than not!
4. Do you enjoy creating anything other than your word babies?
I recently took up drawing/sketching. I post finished projects on Facebook. I’ve tried out most any craft over the years. I can crochet and cross stitch. I don’t have a sewing machine anymore, but I used to sew. I’ve painted simple projects in the past. Just about anything you can pick up from a Michael’s store, I’ve probably tried it. I like working with my hands.
5. Where does your love of supernatural/paranormal/fantasy come from? Or is it something that has always been with you?
Always, as far back as I can remember. Sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, all that stuff. My parents were geeks.
6. You have been drafted to compete in a triathlon, with the option to ask one of your characters to take your place. Which of them would step up, and who would run screaming? Which one would you ask first, and why?
Agent Seven, Della, would probably do it if I asked nicely. The vampires can’t because of that whole pesky sunlight issue. Carys, from PROTECTOR, would say no way. She’s not into marathon exercise.
7. What would you suggest to other writers when it comes to participating in a writing community? What are your hard and fast rules?
Communities all vary, so if you join up, observe for a while before jumping in. Helps prevent stepping on any toes. Follow the rules set by the group. Contribute help where you can.
8. Do you have any co-authors? Human or of the four legged variety?
No. And my cat isn’t allowed on my desk. Otherwise, my keyboard would’ve stopped working a long time ago!
9. How do you deal with writer’s doubt?
Talk (whine) to my closest peeps. Give myself a break. Know it’s normal and everyone has it. Distract myself with something fun. Someone with zero doubts is delusional. The best books of all time still get low reviews, so….
10. Late at night, you’re walking down an alley in the worst part of town. What villain, either yours or from someone else’s book, would you hate to run into?
Juliet from STRANGE ALLIES and Nicholae from SAVING CHARLOTTE. My vampire William before PROTECTOR. Any of the Red Court or Black Court vamps from The Dresden Files…..every villain from The Dresden Files, actually.

Excerpt 1:

Carys, next time someone asks you to go with them to the middle of nowhere, say no.

My old professor asked me to come along on a trip to study native music. He was cataloging the songs of an obscure tribe. I had nothing more important to do, so I said sure. Got all the necessary shots and documents, and we made the long journey down.

Little did I know, it would be a life changing experience.

Our destination was a small village in the heart of the South American jungle. How he ever heard of them, I didn’t know. Took us three days by boat to get there. Our team consisted of the professor, our guide/interpreter, the professor’s assistant who was using this trip as info for his thesis, and me. As a music therapist, I used music to heal people’s souls, so I would be lending my expertise in the emotional resonance of the songs.

Approximately fifty people lived in the village, some of the nicest people I’d ever met, instantly welcoming and glad to share their musical history. My job was recording the performances with the handheld camera. They kept staring at me when they thought I wasn’t looking. At first, I attributed it to them never seeing a fair-skinned woman before, but the stares continued through the week.

That should have been my first clue.

Los Angeles cityscape

Excerpt 2:

A month later, it was my first day out doing something normal—shopping at the mall. Up to now, I’d avoided crowds, doing my grocery shopping when the stores were almost deserted. Walking to my car in the parking garage, my hands were full of bags, and a man walked behind me. At first, I didn’t think of hearing someone behind me, until his footsteps sped up to get close to me. He demanded my purse. I was willing to cooperate since I didn’t want to provoke him. Better my stuff than my life, right? That’s what the police tell you to do. So, I set down the bags, and the guy lunged for my purse.

I can’t tell you how I did what happened next.

Next thing I knew, I had the guy in a choke hold with claws pressed to his neck. Claws! The guy started freaking out, then, begging me not to hurt him. I tightened the hold until he blacked out, then called 911 on my cell phone. The police arrived, took my statement and the mugger, and I went home.

Shaking.

My fingernails turned into claws. That was NOT normal. Both hands? I stared at my left. Yep, both hands. Oh God.

And then the fight moves. What was that? This wasn’t The Matrix. I hadn’t been plugged into a machine for a kung fu download. Had I? What really happened in that village?

R&R Karen Chance

Rants and Raves

Pritkin… soooo dreamy… I waited with barely contained impatience for Reap the Wind to be released… I reread the excerpt chapters, and stalked the internet for any tidbits that Karen Chance would drop…

3fa69da3a4d6508aeb25194504ee38de

It was torture… lol… This book in the Cassie Palmer series ended up being too long (according to Chance) and that meant that she had to either edit out or find a break in the story that allowed her to turn one book into two… She decided to go with the two book option, but that meant that we were forced to wait for her to find that break, and then go back into editing mode…

Personally, I am glad that she went with the two book option… there is so much information and potential for future twists and turns packed into Reap the Wind… information that could have been benched and then forgotten… At least if I was in her shoes… I know that when I make chances, I always save the scenes that I cut out, but as I move forward my brain comes up with all these new ways to progress the story… it is really hard for me to find a way to fit those scenes that I loved back into the world I have created…

This isn’t exactly a bad thing, but there are possibilities in Reap the Wind that I, for one, would hate to see lost to the side lines… information about Pritkin, and how he could evolve… not just as Cassie’s friend, but also as a character… I also enjoyed seeing Cassie dropping into scenes already played out in the Dorina Basarab series… even though Cassie still doesn’t know about Dory, I can see the potential for future interaction between the two characters… and lets not forget Mircea…

Mircea’s character could go in so many ways… Chance could build a whole new series with him, she could continue as is and possible have a Pritkin vs Mircea triangle with Cassie being pulled between the two, she could go into a poly relationship type storyline… Hey… I am up for anything, especially if Pritkin gets lots of scene time… lol… did I mention that I love that character… And although Reap the Wind didn’t tie up the issues we have been waiting for answers to, it did wet my appetite for the next novel… Ride the Storm…. so now the wait continues… grrr… man do I hate waiting… how am I supposed to procrastinate my own editing if my favorite authors don’t publish stories faster… hehehe…

okay… enough of that for now… until next month, happy wordage everyone… hopefully I will be ranting and raving about the upcoming Sherlock movie next month… I spotting the poster for the upcoming release… two days only…

NE9AIWbw8hvAcg_2_b

Now this says Jan 1st but my theater said the 5th and 6th… I’m pretty sure… but I may have to miss the theater goodies, and instead watch just the show … I usually buy it on amazon video and watch it that way… I rarely get to go out to the movies with my MS hating the theater seats, but if you guys get out see the special, feel free to rant and rave for us… everyone should love Sherlock… muhahahaha… he is my favorite sociopath!!!

Finder’s Keepers Series, Book Two

Chapter One

The portal tossed Quaidin Lari in every direction until he felt like his head was spinning and his stomach was about to evict all of its contents in any manner possible; north or south, he was about to be sick. Colors flew by in shades of burnt green and browns so dark they might as have been considered black. He could have handled the depressing color scheme and the runaway rollercoaster ride but the shots of yellow and brightest white being flashed before his eyes was too much.

Squeezing his eyes shut, Quaidin prayed to Lac Mar that the ride would soon end. He was one of the Fianna, the mercenary troop, taking over the job of policing the Fae community for the missing Sentinels. Hurling his guts up and pray to the Fae Goddess Lac Mar wouldn’t look very reassuring to those depending on the Fianna for safety. Besides, he was in charge of persuasion for his squad. He had all the allure of his Incubus heritage, but no one looked at the deathly ill and thought, “I want to tell this man all my secrets.”

Just when he thought that Fate had decided to turn a simple portal jump into a lifetime of confusion and punishment, Quaidin stumbled across solid ground, immediately falling to his knees. He couldn’t see straight yet but knew that he wanted to go home to Out-realm. Every time he came Earth-side, the experience cemented how much he hated the place. “Please tell me I managed to land in a patch of soft, foul smelling Kentucky mud.”

No one answered. Still, Quaidin refused to open his eyes. His knees were firmly planted on solid ground, but his hands had managed to find something disgusting.

Sitting up, his ass propped up on his feet, he continued to deny the truth. Eyes tightly closed, he started flinging and flicking his hands to dislodge the substance clinging to his skin.

His squad mates all started screaming at once.

“Son of a-”

“Dammit, Quaidin.”

“You lousy-”

“Stop that you-”

Grinning like a devil, Quaidin opened his eyes. Looking around at Casfin, Vloran, Zander, and Yolland he cut them all off. “We can all wear this muck together.”

Casfin, one of the most laid back and composed Captains the Fianna mercenaries had ever seen, looked like he was on the verge of homicide. Stripping off his clothes without a word, Casfin stalked off to a nearby pond. One by one, the others decided to follow.

Vloran was last to add his clothes to the growing pile. It wasn’t that the man was slower. For a nearly eight foot mountain, he could move quick swiftly when he wanted to. When he wanted to, being the key phrase.

Quaidin pushed himself up from the ground as Vloran turned to leave. “What’s the big deal? A little dirt never hurt anyone.”

Vloran glared over his shoulder, and said, “I believe the people Earth-side call what you landed in a cow-patty.” Seeing the, no doubt, confused look on Quaidin’s face, Vloran turned away in disgust. “Cow shit, man. You landed in cow shit.”

More than ready to go home, Quaidin ripped off his clothes and threw them on the burnable heap of mission clothing. Moving for the water, he barked, “I hate this place.”

Quaidin eyed the large beast lazily munching on grass the grass growing alone the bank of the small pond. Floating in the middle of the water, he felt safe in glaring at the cow. He felt like he was suffocating in heat and honeysuckle. How could it be so hot? Summers on Earth-side wouldn’t begin for another week. They needed to find the new Fae Princess and slip back through a portal to Out-realm before the heat level reached the nineties, or Lac Mar forbid, the hundreds.

“Come on Quaidin. Our ride should be here any minute.” Casfin dropped Quaidin’s satchel on the bank and walked off.

The cow moved suspiciously toward his satchel, spurring Quaidin to swim with increasing strokes for the edge of the pond. Keeping one eye on the animal, he pulled his body onto the grass and started jerking his spare uniform out of his satchel. Unless he wanted to wear his uniform for the entirety of the mission, he needed to locate something a little more fashionable for the area.

Vloran moseyed over – the man was the definition of relaxed – and tossed him a canteen of water.

“Thanks man.” Quaidin took a long pull of the slightly warm water. “Is the portal shut down yet?”

The portal they had just to get to Earth-side was a rogue portal. Their squad was in charge of shutting the portal down, but instead of taking care of the matter while they were still in Out-realm they had used it to travel closer to the Princess and their goal. Casfin had decided that using the rogue portal would put them closer to the Princess and the Danshue that had created the portal in the first place.

The Danshue, or evil Fae, were growing in number and they all had it out for Princess de Platadreki. They needed to secure the Princess and eliminate all threats along the way.

“Yolland and Zander are taking care of it. The portal was hastily opened, but that just means that it will be harder to close. It looks like someone just ripped open a hole in reality. Some of the spells used to open it need to be reinforced so that the entire does not explode as they attempt to close the link.” Vloran crouched down, his arms planted on his knees. His eyes continually quartered the area, watching the trees, the field, the nearby gravel road, and even the sky.

Pants on and shoes laced up, Quaidin checked the ground for any surprises before flopping down beside Vloran. “Casfin could close it in no time.”

Plucking a piece of grass to roll between his fingers, Vloran looked back at Yolland and Zander. “Guess the Captain thinks they need the practice. Would have done it himself otherwise.”

Quaidin took another swallow of warm water, refusing to even unpack his shirt until the last minute. He pinched a few strands of his light brown hair between his fingers and pulled the wavy mass forward. Squinting his eyes, he tried to determine if the missing blonde streaks were covered in mystery pond scum or if they were just heavy with water. He was about to ask Vloran what he thought when a large SUV came into sight, slowly driving down the one lane road at the edge of the field. “Looks like our ride has arrived. Maybe you and Casfin can stick you heads out of the windows.”

It was no more than the truth. Vloran had to be nearing the eight foot mark, and their dear Captain looked to be slightly over the eight foot mark. Quaidin didn’t know a lot about Earth-side, always wishing to keep his visits short, but humans rarely made it to seven feet. They definitely didn’t make cars to accommodate small giants. It was a good thing that human and Norms – those Fae born without magic – were unable to see anything placed under a glamor. Otherwise, Vloran and Casfin would have started a riot. What with Vloran’s silver skin tone and the light blue dusting on Casfin’s otherwise pale skin, it was hard to mistake them for human.

“Come on funny guy. With the mood Casfin is in, he may just leave your ass if you make him wait.”

Giving Chase Excerpt

Giving Chase

by Tracey Clark

My entry in this anthology is Giving Chase… a look at Savien Volt (A character that will drop by in book two of the Finder’s Keepers series)… here is an excerpt …

Savien Volt moved through the closely packed trees, checking for moss and berries, for tree sap and varying ivy plants. He was amazed at the number of potion ingredients to be found in the Kentucky area of Earth-side. Once he finished collecting ingredients from the trees and brush, he had a number of caves to explore for their limestone, bats, and other things that liked to dwell in dark, cool and damp places.

The cool breeze was a welcomed relief on his sweat soaked skin. Savien just needed a few more plants and then he could move into the cooler caves within in the Carter Cave systems to continue his ingredient hunt.

He could feel eyes watching him as he worked but refused to turn around. The man at his back would just have to wait for him to finish searching through the clover patches littering the ground.

If silence could crush the life from a person, Savien would have been in trouble. The power and feeling of anger coming from his visitor added enough weight to interrupt his train of thought. Glancing over his shoulder, he met Anton’s glare. “I already answered you, so why are you here?”

Antonius ‘Anton’ Slade moved slowly but with purpose as Savien turned back to his work. Moving around Savien’s kneeling form, he got down in the dirt and grass. Picking through the clover, Anton remained silent.

Savien worked to fill his potion’s satchel, but finally stopped. “I do not have time.” Still Anton said nothing, continuing to dig through the clover. “I mean it Anton. I have one week to collect all I need for the Queen. One week, and I still need to go through the caves. One week and I go back through the nearest portal. I need to get to work on the potions and spells that will help to promote a healthy birth. I plan to saturate the birthing chamber with positive energy, and I want at least a month to add to the –“

“Yes, yes. And you will. I will personally make sure that you have what you need. I will find your ingredients, while you find Trina Blue.”

“Look. I want to do more than prepare the birthing chamber. I need to –“

“Indeed.” Anton stood up and handed Savien the pile of clovers he had collected. Dusting off his pants and hands, Anton braced his legs apart and crossed his arms. “I am well aware of the protections you plan to place around the Castle. I promise that you will have more than enough ingredients by the time you need to leave for Out-realm. More than enough. Besides, the Queen has sent help and has already approved my request.”

“Fine. But screw this up and I will find a way to jinx even you.”

Giving a masculine chuckle, Anton walked off. “Jinx away, my friend. Just make sure you also bring Miss Blue back before you do.”

New short story

Very exciting… A few months back I was asked to participate in an anthology of shorts by new and unknown authors… Catherine Broughton invited me to join the fun, and for my part, I decided to introduce one of the characters that will be seen in Book Two of the Finder’s Keepers Series…

Giving Chase

Savien Volt is focused on helping to prepare for the upcoming birth of the Queen’s latest child. He wants nothing to do with Antonius Slade, but Anton has connections. Connections that include the Queen herself, and she wants Savien to help Anton locate a woman that lives deep in the forests of North-eastern Ohio. A woman that no one else has been about to track down…
