Having a day of Poetry w/ Scott Hastie

AV008A

I thought that it would be wonderful to take a day for poetry, and Scott Hastie was kind enough to drop by… although I love poetry, it has been a long time since I have put down any lines of my own… there was a time when the only writing it did came in the form of a poem… it was easier with my dyslexia to spin my tales in this shortened format… it was something that I could share with my mother and grandfather… these days I focus more on novels and short stories (oh do I hate the edits) but poetry will always hold a special place in my heart… and without further ado, lets learn a little about Scott Hastie…

Author Bio:

Scott Hastie

Scott Hastie is a successful British born poet and writer, who has been has been commercially published in the UK for over twenty years now. He currently has ten titles in print, including a novel and four collections of poetry. In recent years, the spiritual tone in his unique poetic voice is starting to draw increasing attention from a worldwide audience, especially in the U.S. India & the Middle East.

Published in both print & e editions in 2014, Angel Voices was then his most substantial publication to date, featuring over 40 new poems never before seen, either in print or on the net. This title building much more on the mature poetic voice that first began to emerge in Scott’s previous title Meditations and featuring ALL readers favourites, as showcased on his popular website. For much more info and some spectacular reviews for Angel Voices (as well as direct non-trade order options and deals…) go to www.scotthastie.com

What’s more, with interest continuing to build fast, plans are now already afoot for the release of a sparkling new collection of Scott’s poetry: Threads – currently in production and scheduled for release in this Spring! This already considered to be his landmark achievement to date, looking as it does to further develop the spiritual themes in his work and with key feature pieces already widely translated and published to worldwide acclaim.

Fortunately, it is still very easy to dip into Scott’s poetry at his highly visual and internationally popular new web site, which freely displays samples of both his already published and latest unpublished work. As a writer, Scott is very open and likes to encourage maximum participation and feedback from his readers.

His web site offers the chance to post comments, both on individual pieces or more generally, if you wish… And also encourages dialogue about writing. Scott offers mentoring services to other creative writers and students around the world. He is also passionate about visiting and learning from other cultures and his web site also features many fascinating photos from his extensive travels around the world.

Now my peeps, I asked Scott to tell us a little more about himself… and this is what he decided to share with us… Plus a few of his poems, found below… he left it up to me to decide which of his works to include in this post… but I have always believed that a poem can mean many different things to varying people… each reader will put a different picture to the words… some will dislike a poem loved by dozens, and dozens my love a poem detested by millions… therefore I decided to include each of the poems provided by Scott, and I will let you guys decide… but this means that this post will be longer than most… about as long as the posts that include my book excerpts… anywho… I hope everyone finds one or two poems that you enjoy so much you read it over and over… 😛

Scott says:

“I feel blessed to be living and writing full-time at home in the glorious Hertfordshire countryside, only a thirty minute commuter ride from London. My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics like Keats, Coleridge & Blake, then on to Gibran, Rilke & Eliot and then through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition and later technical breakthroughs achieved in the 1970’s by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.

I am also fortunate to have a smallish study all to myself, up in the loft at the top of my house, which looks out over open fields and a tree-lined skyline. Here I have quiet, cocooned space overlooking the English countryside (almost in the clouds…) and absolutely everything I need. Far, far away from anything else – phones, computers, tablets and door bells, especially…

For me, as a full time writer, a fairly rigorous, almost monastic daily routine is very important and underpins all my efforts. Not just in creating an exterior environment that is conducive to a concentrated and undisturbed focus on my craft – but one that also allows important preparatory time of an almost religious nature – given the spiritual themes that run through my work.

On a normal day, this would involve around two hours of advance preparation: morning exercise (normally running in the countryside and/or rowing) followed by breathing exercises, body stretches and meditation, sometimes some music also – before even beginning to think about any writing…

Having also eaten simply, I then would normally write in silence for between two to four hours – losing any sense of time, till my body tells me it is time to refuel. Immediately after lunch, I would then have a shorter 1-2 hour session (often the most exciting time of the day when earlier writing can begin to coalesce) Evenings are then usually important down-time from what is a quite an intense and tiring process. However I would still normally have a couple of short sessions early, right after my evening meal and also last thing before bed – which are more about reviewing existing work and quick, little polishing sessions – looking afresh and anew at whatever has emerged that day.

For me, it’s very important that every day (whether a writing day or not) begins and ends with me quietly reading through my last half a dozen pieces – in order hopefully to stay ‘in the flow’ and ‘in the voice’, clinging on tightly to that ‘silken thread’ that, once it slips from your grasp, can often be so hard to regain! Unless I’m away travelling or have specific social commitments, then EVERY day is a writing day.

I also have three identical and rather wonderful little digital voice recorders that literally go everywhere with me (one stays by the bed) so that, whatever I’m up to… I have some chance of capturing all those amazing little thoughts and insights that come to you, just out the blue – and as if by magic! Usually when you are in the throws of just doing something else, entirely – or just surfacing from sleep, for example. Previously so, so much would previously just get lost in the ether forever, before I started to do this and built it into my daily resources and routine.

All my life (and for reasons I can’t quite be sure of) I have always been a seeker in the spiritual sense and always very ambitious to live life to the full. Whenever I am blessed with special moments or insights in my life, then my first instinct is to share the light and energy that comes from this experience with others. I am particularly keen to reach younger readers and students, still at a formative time in their lives and am always especially gratified when this group of readers in particular is touched by my work.

I suppose, at the core of my creative effort, is an attempt to try and present and illuminate a runway ahead, if you like… Fed directly by my own being and experience – in the hope that it resonates. My personal mode of doing this is, of course, as an writer, artist and as a poet in particular.”

Some of Scott’s poems:

Graced

Graced with the chance

To be here,

Even if only fleetingly,

Embrace

Whatever comes your way

And, in so doing,

However enchanting

Any treasures

You uncover might be,

Their loss

Should never be your concern.

In this matter

Make your heart your queen

And follow her as faithfully

And bravely as you are able,

Just as swelling fruit

Hurries

Towards its own sweetness,

Shine whilst you can

Without fear,

For nothing is as inevitable

As it seems here.

No, not even the fissures

Of loss and decay

We are oft led to expect

In this temporal world.

Such is true joy’s

Absolute certainty.

Its slow-lit fuse

That burns holes

In the shabby shroud

Of death forever.

The Day is done

The day is done

And no one is immune,

It’s true.

That sense of a voyage

Slips seamlessly past,

Though there is a beginning;

An end to everything.

And yet a sense of connection,

Some bejewelled purpose too.

Like the child

Whose way ahead

You’ve already lit,

Or the lover you’ve yet to meet.

Many such moments

Come and go, as they must,

Melting away

Into the space we are given.

But what endures for me

Is a persistent resonance,

Some heady wish

For access again

To a sense of wonder

In the stream of things,

That, this time round,

It might just be possible

To keep in my heart

A little longer.

So tarry with me awhile

And we will see

What we can do

To tenderly explore

Beneath the frail shell

Of all we’ve since become.

Trusting that,

Maybe within

Such smoothly sculpted casing,

And still delicately enclosed,

Might just lie the silky lustre

Of some lavish

And joyful communion,

Waiting for its chance

To grip

And catch the light again.

Here I am

Here I am,

As if to confound myself,

Just as I ever was.

Seemingly little more

Than an excited dervish,

Forever chasing shadows,

Knowing that,

Come what may,

Beauty will continue

To throng around me,

Till I am no more.

What was it I never told you?

For isn’t it true that,

Without fear,

We are capable of anything…

The smell of fresh rain,

Like gunpowder on the lawn,

Embellishes the day,

As the summer rips on.

And we can but wonder

As, flawless,

Early morning moisture,

Stranded on a leaf,

Glints in the sunshine.

The world watches

And waits for us, it seems…

As if to suggest tis best

To have an unquiet response

To the nature of things.

So drink deep of your sorrows,

Drink deep of your joy

And then love

And live restlessly

For as long

As the charged ache

In your spirit allows.

Despite what we imagine

Despite what we imagine

In our sometime pain,

Beset

Either by aching anticipation

Or subsequent loss,

Lovers are never found by chance.

So tell that to the trees,

Who’ve seen it all

Countless times before

And can only stand apart

In the meadow of life

And wait

For us to dream again,

Like some broken hearted waif

On a grimy street,

For whom only the predatory

Are likely to stop.

For not even fool’s comfort

Can cling on there

To inhibit notes of caution

That would otherwise

Trim our wings,

Spoil any such dividend.

And so much more too!

Seems like

We always had this coming.

Our needs, till met,

Like rising sap,

Like clotted pollen in the air.

As it always is

In beauty’s sweet surrender,

Desire is the irresistible pull

That draws us steadily

Onto one another

And then fruits.

You were in me all along.

There’s an intricate chain

There is an intricate chain

At work here,

From one fleeting moment

Of grace to another.

A myriad of links,

Far too long and interlaced,

Even within one

Tentative soul’s journey,

To fathom.

And so the challenge

Is a simple one,

To keep

Bringing light to bear.

And to do so

With all the good faith

One can muster,

Till some chinks appear.

A fateful knock at your door

That will surely come again.

The choice then

Will always be a stark one;

Between surrender of sorts,

Or recourse to hollow dreams,

Long since eclipsed by time.

Our conjoined instincts,

Like sexual fire,

Come and go.

But that’s the way of things.

Forever in the background

A persistent, elemental energy

That didn’t ask to be here,

Just is…

And when it bursts forth

Tis a wonderfully furious thing.

As we toil and spin

As we toil and spin,

Pause and gather in

The stillness,

Whenever you are able.

Trusting that,

Time after time,

This might bind

Ever deeper

In your soul

And, one day,

Come gloriously to bear.

Otherwise how vain

A deceit is distraction,

Leaking into everything

To spoil our chances.

And, in so doing,

Look how we fashion

Instead a raw

And unnecessarily restless

Sadness in our hearts.

For it is what it is,

This life,

No more and no less…

And everyday

It shines upon us

With a patience

That is inestimable.

So take heart from this

And simply surrender

In moments,

As best you can,

Even if only in modest ripples

That gently caress

The shore of your dreams.

Life collects

Life collects,

Pools around you.

It paints its highlights.

Nothing there

You can destroy

Or begin again.

Calm in aquamarine beauty,

Barely a hint

Of surf’s snowy trim.

Today the sea is out

But will come again.

For the moment,

On the beach,

My love and I,

Naked and blissful

As can be.

In the soft,

Sun baked sand

History

Between my toes.

Sense how

Even the smooth stones

Ache

With stories of their own

In the shuddering

Light of day.

Whenever you can

Whenever you can conjure

The stillness to notice,

There is

A sense of the ancient

Hanging in the air.

A lingering spiritual fragrance,

Full of knowing,

That dresses

Contemporary journeys

Like ours.

And always set against

Such a broad tapestry,

Long woven too

With telling details

That confirm who we are,

Albeit still as raw

And naive as any infant.

All the more so

When stood, toe to toe,

With the luminosity

Of days gone by.

And embarking, as best we can,

On the benevolent opportunity

Of one thin slice

Of a chosen life,

However glorious,

Or loaded with pathos

This eventually becomes.

No chance of tragedy

Here though!

For we truly are,

As we come to recognise

Ourselves to be,

Mere receptacles.

Gilded chariots

That our spirits ride out,

But for a hallowed moment in time.

The merest splash of presence

In the serried halls of wonder.

Monthly Goods

I have been thinking… blogging is very important to a writer but what do I really have to say to people besides my writing??? So what did I come up with??? Monthly goods, or more accurately, weekly goods… Like the first week of every month I could update the world on book progress…

The second week of every month??? How about Multiple Sclerosis facts from my point of view… I mean, we all have issues and problems that we have to deal with on a daily basis… it is only through exposure that the scary and unknown can be faced… as human beings we have a very long history of lashing out at what we don’t understand… I actually had a woman screaming in my face when i parked in a handicapped parking space… not cool… but when you first look at me, i  look healthy and in the prime of life… HA… after I was near tears and screaming back that she could call my doctor up for my latest MRI (possible foul language involved) she became meek and started explaining all the reasons why her behavior was acceptable…. still not cool… I know that explaining my day to day MS blues might not help with parking lot attacks, but if those I know and those I interact with know what MS is and how it can affect my reactions and health, then hopefully misunderstandings can be avoided… but lets be a little more fun with the topic… lots of facts, and some oops, the MS made me do it stories… (like the time I threw my diet coke in my own face because of an arm twitch…)

Week three??? Lets do art time… I love all things art… and when I need to recharge (aka: give my brain a rest) I put down the evil edits and do something artsey… paint an oil painting, design a bracelet, and I plan to start making my own pendants…. the clay has been bought, and soon the pendants will be created… muhahahaha… not to mention the design book mom picked out for one of my Christmas presents (shhh, don’t tell)

And finally we rap up the month with Random Chat… like ranting and raving about my favorite shows and movies, the local restaurants, and vacation fun… and everything has to be full of pinterest pictures as well as my own pictures…

But that only takes up four days out of every month… that is a lot of days left un-blogged… boooo…. these are the early days of my writing career… which means I have time to put in a few more blogs than the more famous authors… So lets put in a few book reviews when I have read something new (which is my other pass-time) and random daily insanity posts… woo who… for now, happy wordage every one, Tracey Clark

Fall Into Romance bloghop

Ahhhh…. Fall is the best time of year, especially in Ky

fall KY/home
fall KY/home

My favorite Fall Activity has to be taking pictures of all the changing colors, the leaves falling to the ground in reds, yellows, and browns… and so many other colors. It is also the only time of year that I feel comfortable walking through the trees. The cool crisp air gets along with my MS, and I get to enjoy the outdoors. I love the way the world smells and feels.

I also love to paint and write in the fall, not that I don’t normally love these activities, but fall seems to recharge my battery. It seems right that my first book was released this fall. Shocking Finds is a paranormal/fantasy romance at its best… Fae assassins, betrayal, and undeniable lust…

Rebels and Readers Event

8498927

I was so nervous to be volunteering at this years Rebels and Readers Event… soo many readers and authors running around and I didn’t have a clue what to do… I felt like a fish out of water… 😛 thankfully, the feeling of community and acceptance was just as strong there (face to face) as it is online… I even managed to come out of my shell a little.. as a life long lover of living in the shadows being forward usually gives me heartburn…

By volunteering, I got the chance to interact and do a test run of group interaction… now don’t laugh… there are a lot of people that think this type of attitude is silly, or just an act… But I was that girl that got the solo, but didn’t really want it… I loved to sing, but thinking about all those people staring at me … well, I threw up before every concert… lol… being at the Rebels and Readers Event was a lot like that… (No vomit this time) … one of the things I have started doing in order to push my limits is to immediately tell people that I’m shy, that I don’t know what I’m doing, that I’m afraid I will screw up… this help by letting others know that I am not bitchy or stuck up, I just don’t know what to say or do… they gave me a task to concentrate on, and once I started feeling comfortable, I allowed my inner jokester to come out (the one that usually only comes out to play when I’m around friends and family) the other thing I have been doing to help myself become more outgoing??? I hum or sing to myself whenever the action slows down and I don’t have a task to focus on… silly, but it works for me … singing in front of people used to instill horrible fear, even more than speaking… by using my voice in this small way, I keep myself from hiding in those welcoming shadows…

Check out the Rebels and Readers’s BLOG for all kinds of book goodies

 12208239_561282254025081_784365183_n

The Event seemed to go really well… the authors voiced a lot of thanks to Amy and Tanya (Rebel and Readers Queens!!!) There were dozens of give-a-ways and raffle games… The crowd packed in from 10am-2pm on both Saturday and Sunday, enjoying all the free swag and numerous books to purchase… The above picture is from Sunday, which contain about half as many people… double the number of people you see in the picture and you still can’t imagine how packed it was… lol… walking through the room was a challenge but worth suffering the overwhelming body heat… Rock on Authors…

11033893_557711237709652_938735184380966700_n

Why the heck am I wearing a sweater, you ask??? it was under 40 degrees outside and the air conditioning was on high in the event areas to combat the number of people enjoying all the lovely books… Casey L. Bond took pity on me as I shivered in my short sleeved shirt (early in the event before the crowd brought in the body head) She is a lovely person, not to mention a awesome author… you guys should definitely check out her books… And how cute it is that sweater… I loved it, and need one of my own… lol… The sweater promotes the lovely Cambria Herber’s Nerd Series… Another wonderful author… she has so many must read books, as well as information (on her blog/follow the link) for authors like me that feel like they are drowning in the Promotional aspect of being a writer…

I am glad I got to volunteer this year… It gave me a chance to watch the authors in actions and take notes on what I should do when I become one of their number… Shocking Finds  will hopefully have a table to display itself next year… now I need to get cracking on finishing the next book… Seriously, the authors and readers were great… I can’t wait for next year…

Don’t for get the contest to win a free ebook copy of Shocking Finds (A Finder’s Keepers Novel) ends tomorrow at 10am… I thought the contest ended at noon, but sorry guys, it ends a little earlier than that… just go to CD Hersh’s Blog and leave a comment on Shocking Finds Friday Feature… Woo who…

“You were told! You were warned.”

James froze in place. His hand shook as he slowly reached for the gun at his side. He turned slowly, trying to hide the moments of his hand. “Don’t want no trouble, friend.”

That weird sign about dead bodies already had his nerves on edge. Like he needed to be told not to touch dead bodies, but why would this field be full of corpses.

Finally facing back the way he had entered the large field of cheat grass and boulders, James whipped out his gun and started firing at the body crawling out of the ground.

She had been told about the orphans and their antics. Jessica knew that the girls would try to freak her out, but this was insane. There was no way that the slight females should be able to hang halfway up the walls with no real handholds. That was bad enough, but when they all started humming the same off key turn with perfect synchronicity, Jessica decided to slowly back out of the room. She needed to get out of this job as soon as possible.

The small skeletal creature appeared dead; his humanoid body placed beneath the words that told all that he didn’t deserve his treatment. His body was contorted in the throws of death, but Jim wasn’t stupid. The last guy to rush into that room was lying with glazed eyes beside the body of the sharp fingered corpse. Fingers that had sliced through the throat to the man beside him.

Nick could feel his body beginning to shake. The world was beginning to darken. Wrapping his arms around his torso, Nick did his best to hold his body together, to keep from flying apart. He couldn’t afford to disintegrate in the middle of town square. It was night and no one appeared to be around but how could he be sure?

“No, no, no…”

Beyond his control, his body burst into an invisible cloud of atoms.

  1. The suffocating feeling only grew as Jamie forced her way through the trees. She could feel the branches reaching out to stop her in her tracks, scratching along her exposed flesh, grabbing at her unbound hair.
  2. The bushes filled every available escape from the dark. A forest should be full of cotton tailed rabbits and white tailed deer, not demonic bushes swaying and groaning in the wind. “Eep.” Lacey squeaked and whirled around at the feel of grasping hands. Throwing her hand over her mouth, she began to shake as she stood transfixed, staring at the innocent looking bush.

The darkness in her eyes froze Sam in his place. It moved like a rippling lake at midnight, attacking his mind, calling to him. Sam moved across the room, unable to stop. The screams in his mind intensified but never made it from his lips.

Shaking his hands out, Jake did his best not to scream. He didn’t know what the hell was going on but tingling, glowing hands couldn’t be healthy. As the tingling began to itch and burn, Jake forgot about manly silence. “What the hell?” He needed a bucket of water, a block of ice … something to keep his extremities from bursting into flames.

bdb484949b64fad81d197741a2e6a3a7

Every slice of his scalpel reveled more and more blood. He needed more towels if he wanted to find what made her tick. At least the screaming had stopped. As much as he enjoyed the sound of a woman’s voice in distress, he needed to concentrate. He needed to find the heart before it was too late. If he couldn’t feel it’s last few beats, then all his hard work would be for nothing. Ruined because this bitch decided to bleed heavier than the others.

Muhahahahaha… Okay, now it’s your turn to let the story flow. 😛 Happy Hallow’s Eve… okay, I’m a bit early… but a writer needs to be prepared… Happy Wordage, Tracey

Oct 23 writing prompt… SIGN

For the Oct 23 writing prompt I am going with the word SIGN…

13c9b73fce51c9871369f04b2fdd054f

Your character could follow the signs. The easiest way to think of this would be in the real world… we get directions to our chosen destination by following signs. A map may give you an overview of where you want to go, but signs that change mile by mile help to pinpoint where you are going. You could also think of this in a paranormal way. If one part of the room is hotter or colder than the rest, your character could follow the supernatural signs…

ASL… American Sign Language is a form of communication for those with hearing problems… Multiple countries have their own form of sign language… all over the world you can find people that speak with their hands… I really like that last sign, with the hands spelling out ‘live, love, laugh…’

39147ee388347a79286219a72715abff949757aa4203f6519ba5b9e3e243f7a9188cf69b47a7bd0b6b87a6958b1e7982

Street signs are used to help drivers… I mean, no one wants to go into a sharp curve at sixty miles an hour… okay, there are some dare devils that find that thrilling, but if your character usually drives normally it would be shocking to have then in a car chase with a punch of signs missing… like a missing ‘one way’ sign could cause all kinds of trouble… and it happens all the time around here… especially around Halloween… teens have a tendency to claim street signs for their bedrooms…

bd7effcb0273e5421736fb8cfb990698

Warning signs could play into your story, especially if you have a character searching for something… they are bound to ignore a warning sign if they believe they are on the right track… muhahahaha… But warning signs could also be more mental/physical… a clenched fist is a warning sign that your character is pissed… either trying to hold back their anger or preparing to throw a punch…

bfb8e062797beded10d5ef69e1c6a1efdd1b3bf99c11dfbfb3099af1e19e6fa7b7420fdb1ef31758907748ae96d092b5

Joke signs are basically decorations… or sarcastic warnings (like a sign that shows a man being eaten by a shark with the words underneath ‘don’t feed the fishes’…

d9eb0ce8725ab55e6fbb933e4069538e

Signed papers… this is where you put your signature on something… it could be a document for the ups guy, so that you can get the package he has brought you… it can be a memento for someone’s birthday or wedding… or even a autographed picture from a celebrity (author, movie star, singer…etc)

6adc09e55da385269223702a603ab78ab90e39154c6c1c08f2c4af268ea17e7ce605812ff8811a80fff16d9684b9c251

And here is my last sign…I should print off this sign for Nov, so that I get my 50K words in… lol

Oct 22 writing prompt… BAR

dd2252166e6981d31e955f83f2592b73

Okay… word warriors… what can you have your characters do with the word BAR… are they going out dancing at a bar, are they fixing a nightcap at their in home mini-bar, or relaxing after a hard day on the road with a drink from the hotel mini-bar…

991eeaab1cbf84fd3e1e3c993d65e41382c7e54d34efd443ec854eae9db1a60efb31541b5251bc5968d51680fbf7b82e

Or if your character is in jail, it would be ‘behind bars’

47021721d6930c7067d3f94187917e30

you could think of bars in the terms of gymnastics… like the uneven bars, which is two bars… or the single bar, which is supposed to be harder than the uneven bars…

69d1d1ec8f1d3ea72145df14ce37d153e079e818890bbc32ed2cdaf557729103

In other sports, there is the polevolting bar… you run with a pole and then try to sling your body into the air and over the polevolting bar…

6860612aef46cc393b190d6c71c08db6ba7cf4883c4766c1c912f28608869a5d

or ‘raising the bar’ which is a term used in business… usually the boss wants to see who is the best, and will raise the bar by throwing out a particularly hard task/case/assignment…

d13d11779fcd5249d6402e8383f11adf

an easy one to work into your story would be ‘breakfast bar’ because hey, your character have to eat sometime… and it is easy to grab a breakfast bar

c52c60812a2b1640004eae7a9864e9d53848cab21f46d81f4bab1c1a89b3a2a7

and lastly, a type of exercise… and also a different type of raising the bar… lifting weights deals with a lot of different types of bars, usually with weights attached to either end…

7574bf842034a07c82e9c7fde6152715

alright, no for forth and write greatness… happy wordage, tracey

Oct 21 writing prompt… MAZE

7347198e6b7163db2e586fe3009468b3

The Oct 21 writing prompt is MAZE… a maze is basically something that you get lost in, with no idea which way to go…

b8fa7480b62ed4af7af6a6023787f751

anyone that watched the first Maze Runner, will be able to pull up a visual of a maze in which your characters can get lost in, fight monsters in, and run around looking for the exit… but a maze can be in a house, out in a hedge garden, or any structure really…

b9c4ca1b13c44f80fe94e28c411aabfd60b8f65e8a5306e734ccb00b3e343b7ed5bb958c95e8e8c05fe6b9f42039054d

or maybe your character is dealing with a mind maze, something that he/she needs to think their way through… their thoughts are going in circles without a clear end in sight…

576c4546e7227d64f463688e52d65c16

SONY DSC
SONY DSC

and if you spell the word a little differently … MAIZE … you get the meaning ‘corn’… sounds the same, but different meanings…

38bf7eb7acb7b74f5dbada0b08267fd825b5cb37458894166286e758ffa78955

or, hey, you could put the words together… a Maize Maze… which is great for Halloween and haunted mazes… oooo, scary

79980c3b8fd2ba4d89c7a0728d111a66

happy wordage, Tracey… and it looks like we are all caught up… maybe I will do the 22nd prompt now so I don’t fall behind again… write something great word warriors…

Oct 20 writing prompt… BOOK

hmmm… whatever could we use the word book for? I mean, it’s just something that you read, right? Your character could be a voracious reader, always with his/her nose in a BOOK… Hey, they could even be reading my book, Shocking Finds…

20151007 Shocking Finds cover

or one of my favorite writers, your bound to have one or two favorites yourself… but mine would be Karen Chance, Shelly Laurenston, etc…

3fa69da3a4d6508aeb25194504ee38de8067677f143f1924760857fbb194b729

Or maybe your character is using a book to plan out his/her perfect crime… muhaahhaha… Maybe something from a horror or a mystery…

df2c2689c594f992493d1967c6552c4c22369d4756b0f5fe835df608a48f8314

or maybe your character is having a breakdown, thinks he/she needs to fight for their life… they could picture the world around them coming to life, mirroring the latest Stephen King novel that they read… or some other horror novel great…

85b70c333c379809c15b3f629b7e7609

then again, maybe you want to focus your story around the word BOOK without dealing with a novel of any kind. Maybe your character is booking a flight, or a cruise… maybe they are booking reservations at the latest hotspot for dinner… you can book all manner of things for vacation or entertainment… you can even book a nail appointment…

e1c4ef856ac9decdf21eebe298a40f6e93dd9812627be6db4f21d5cc5f79ecf87e386dc16c2d13ddeeb56bb87dd5c4ca4ae1db5160b340026e11546ef2f5373faef9ac28ea773fbd88cc84b7924bc31c

Oct 19 writing prompt… SMASHED

0b19c35fac3fcf834ac7524509982408

The word smashed can mean a variety of things… one way to apply the word, is to food

6dbf8e2a4bcdee71f9eb48e616ff5fce ca9650c4b889fca3cd91d93153e60483

or maybe you can apply it to liquids and drunkenness ….

99266a68aa8670ee5ae09798cd9e4287522bed3667a699b8456ed22270f447d74eb5022220d747d107745c9238cdee34

Smashed can be a part of a drink name, or you can use it as slang for a person that has had too much liquor… Your character can be a chief, or a bartender, or maybe someone that has had one beer too many…

If you want to look at the word smashed without a food or liquid involved, I think of smashing your thumb/finger in a door… I hate when I slam a door on my hand and smash the heck out of my fingers… once I even shut my car door on my thumb, while drinking… so I was smashed when I smashed my thumb in the car door… owwwww…

Happy wordage everyone, only four days left until Shocking Finds is released… woo who… Tracey

Delays

Sorry for the delays… I missed a few of my daily writing prompts, which I will be posting later tonight… the world of book editing and swag making threw my MS into coma mode… seems like every time I figured out one of the swag templets my brain went ‘nope, too much… now we sleep!’ and that was it for a few hours… lol… I was like a narcoleptic on a mission…

Anywho… here is a preview of the cute little booklets I made… they contain the first two chapters of Shocking Finds… the bookmarks are almost done, but not yet so no pics of those little buggers…

Booklets:

20151007 Shocking Finds cover

I am happy to chat, or brainstorm with anyone needing a little push… if you can’t reach the 50,000 word goal, now that ever word you reach is one more step closer to your finished book being created… and those reaching the finish line will have a number of prizes to enjoy… happy wordage everyone, tracey

Oct 18 writing prompt… FLOWER

The writing prompt for Oct 18th is FLOWER… at first glance, one would think of the plant life

4dca8426f55f1bb80148d6d885c87ca7

Your character could be a florist or picking up a bouquet for a hot date, send an arrangement of blooms for a sick friend, or picking his/her own from a garden (either a home garden or wildflowers)

629d3740e62a193db33b200d7671e79b02e84728599ecc31bc098a54799b0cfb

But what happens if you just hear the word, instead of seeing it written down… do you think of Flower- plant life, or Flour- baking ingredient??? both words sound the same but their meanings are vastly different… If you think of Flour, you are mixing cakes, baking cookies, making the crust for a pie, or some other oven creation… You also can make gravy, and well… a lot of homemade meals need flour… and a little secret… if you are working with dough/or some other sticky mixture that you are molding by hand, coating your hands in butter helps to keep your fingers from sticking…

64882644baf7fd0a838a2d7088920021f3331cb4bd7e4ee031e9b811da221bcea87a0fae6ffcdb893f3022649df2c277014b4b60e70c167c390c301a433f4514

or if you are working on an at home kids project you could be making paste, glue, or even playdough… all things that you could have your character doing in their day to day life, while you add in some of the all important dialogue …

a418806d71957e2882079bfffac5a90f28fad95d30940c1f5209be32de54e1e1

all pics from pinterest

Now back to the original word… FLOWER… flowers can be used to decorate not just places but people… you can have your character place flowers in her hair, or a popular tattoo for females is the flower… usually a heart, a butterfly, or a flower on the ankle… delicate and feminine …

9a3057260cb5fb50587ef0061603e43f0106e2bb22bcc5b7d5b39c5d52ece199

and lastly, lets look at the romantic angle… de-FLOWER … this is the love scene, the moment when the woman allows herself to be taken by her lover… it can be emotional, heady, down and dirty, or sweet and loving… usually deflower is reserved for a virgin’s first time…

e5f335e1ca42ff142101da862a0350f283e3d86c5da50c8ef1cbb9453f8405da8083c389e0b65c9bce735b96b6c09d40

Now go forth and write… there are two important date coming up… Shocking Finds (A Finder’s Keepers Novel) on Oct 26 and Halloween (Day of the Dead, All Saint’s Eve, Samhain, or whichever you observe)  at the end of the month…

Happy Wordage, Tracey

muhahahahaha

happy wordage, Tracey

also … getting today’s writing prompt ready to be added to the site

Oct 17 writing prompt… Nine different WAYS

I thought that for Oct 17th’s prompt, we could take the word WAY and approach it nine different ways… use the word WAY and peruse the pictures to come up with a story idea… writing prompts are great fillers for when you get stuck during next months NaNoWriMo… okay, now for Nine

In the family WAY… Adding a baby to the picture can throw a whole new spin on your characters way of life, their personality, and their willingness to be ruthless… some may freak out, unready for the responsibility… or maybe overwhelming fear of one small being depending on them…

df5e01810a961923763a665436762d1fa71827243ef503c8db1b8143f8568df680b13405c1ed0be0b08751edd4ddb9062c0d815f7700fef53779920952dd9b42

My WAY or the highway… This is a stubborn personality type that your other characters may want to punch in the face… but what if your character is an alpha male, and in a situation that needs him/her to be in charge… my way or the highway might come into play… eventually you could allow him/her a chance to grow a little, by allowing someone else to make the decisions

113a54224281f74a87c29d59487e0124aaeda6a5c3530085010b5086cabb5162

Going the WAY of the dodo. This is a phrase that has to do with extinction. The dodo was discovered and then quickly hunted into extinction rather quickly, because of their passive nature. If people, businesses, technology is unwilling or unable to change with the tide, to grow into more to stay ahead of the race, then they too will become extinct… For us writers, Barns and Noble is an excellent example… they weren’t quick or efficient enough to compete with Kindle and now we see less and less actual physical locations in which to purchase books… people still love a good paperback, but the cheaper prices and the ease of delivery makes E-books attractive.

b2da3178e4c772ffc791c337285288345f087f60f4a68c95b749d41ad53beae7

Which WAY/ freeway. Your character could be on a trip. I like to go on vacation and try to stop along the way at random places that catch my fancy. I call it going on walk about… Which way should your character go?? Have then set out for one destination, but be sidetracked by something… A roadside sign that shows Amish country fudge or construction… A flat tire in the middle of nowhere… Hunger or restroom needs… Once they stop, so many different things could try to keep them from getting on their way, endanger their lives, or even make them stay and never want to leave.

e735b8168ed120cbd4a076df9d377c73f55dab651ba70c0c12a9c5c51c0b47bf

That WAY lies destruction. Your character keeps doing something that leads them closer and closer to a dead end, a fight, further away from their goal.

9ebd97f43ac1b6232cfaffe5dfaa89f12bfe61476e36da1cb8f5628bb210bc36

In the WAY of progress. Is your character a nature lover, afraid that a corporation will clear out a forest of trees so that they can build a resort… or a logger… or a family of Brownies (or other Fae) living in the trees, needing to learn to cohabitate with humans. Stories revolving around trees are the ones that pop into my mind, but standing in the way of progress could be so many different things… a group of terrorists that refuse to grow, to change, and will fight to stick to the old ways… even trying to force their ways on the progressive cultures… technologies, businesses, farmers, book stores, cultures… anything or anyone that stands in the way of progress will be fighting to stick to the old ways…

fb9fa1d5ab70f5b072d1310265e11b92ffae078673e37ee411c5ed9b2400e05f2469c71daf5f91a26e9b7438b623b83a

WAYlay… hmmm what does the word waylay mean and how can we use it in a story… this is when you take by surprise, attack from the shadows, strike when others have their guard down. The trickster Fae have a tendency to draw travelers from the beaten path, get them lost, and then all manner of bad things can happen… Or a pitcher know for their fast balls can surprise the batter with a curve ball… or maybe your character is a hunter, lying in wait for a deer…

c4f98b1b5512fa9f64b8cf25ea3318efd1469b07c0cedf73562a59787acb8a74fcb1fc5441342bbfd7b67bd1744ded56

Give-a-WAY. This one is very self explanatory. It is when you give things away, toys to children, money as surprise gifts, even the suckers at the bank when you go in to cash a check…

f347d027d4232005985eec3cfc125092ed304f1f5275b37d43caa76a480cf015a7cd85506e7133a874235a96545df3277eba9c1e24b4a96ff6eb8e8eb49be985

Layaway. This is when you lay claim to something, and then have time to pay it off… Your character can work in layaway, and deal with the insanity of holiday gift layaways… or maybe a woman that has a layaway for her child goes to cancel it because she knows she wont be able to come up with the funds, and she finds that someone has paid for the purchases… turns out a man that secretly loves her knew of her troubles and secretly paid for her stuff…

168ba1649ef48b1732a52a65421f1e27

That concluded our nine different WAYS. But I just had to add this last piece… it has the word layaway in it, but for the most part it is just a cute little story… Happy wordage, Tracey
