Add a little sex, humor, and fighting to your Novel

Writing you novel, and looking for the best way to keep your readers interested??? Here are a few aspects that I always try to include… fighting, funny, and fu- … uh, I mean loving.. 😛 loving from friendships to love of your life. Bring you story to life with emotions.

myth

Finding the words to make you Novel memorable!!

The easiest way to write about something is to know it inside and out. If you want to understand the inner workings of the restaurant business??? Want to be able to describe the feeling of flying through the air??? How about explaining the reality of living on a horse ranch???

Watch, Ask, and Do!!! Stalk local restaurants, pull out your pad and pen as you interview anyone that will stand still long enough, and see if you can help out in the kitchen (get hired on a month/summer basis). Take a flying lesson and do all you can to learn the ropes. Lasso yourself a cowboy and … Sorry, got distracted by the thought of cowboys and lassos, but I think you get the picture. Do anything and everything you can think of to learn the feel, the taste, the sounds, the smells, and the sights of the world you want to create.

Sex

love

But what happens when you want to add a little sexual tension to your novel? How about those full blown sex scenes?? And not just the act of sex… the emotions behind either the attraction to another, or the feelings before, during, and after. How does your character’s mindset change because of the thought or the act of intimacy.

Some of the things we add to our novels are either impractical or impossible for us to learn about first hand. Remember that song Can’t Buy Me Love?? Well, you can’t force a love connection just to learn what it feels like. You might not want to try out some of the bedroom gymnastics portrayed by the lustier of novels either. What in the world do you do now?

Well, you could always make it up, use your imagination. But where to start? And how are you going to get your reader to pay attention when your words feel rushed or halting? LOL I suggest you look it up. For me, and my only mildly blush worthy novels, I read it all… the worst of the worst literary porn (I love my smut, I just cant write it), the sweet Happily Ever Afters, and the racy novels. And especially the free short stories on amazon. Those shorts are great for getting the mechanics down. Not always, but usually. Sometimes I’m reading the getting-busy part and I think – no way, he couldn’t even reach her while she does that… lol…

I love romance, from the behind-the-bedroom-door actions to the break-the-bed-and-hope-the-neighbors-don’t-call-the-police sex-capaids. By the time I finished writing Shocking Finds and my other rough drafts, my book shelf looked like a How to Become a Porn Addict guide. lol … My mother borrowed my kindle and just about had a heart attack. I had to show her that I had actually taken notes on different positions so that she didn’t think I had a problem.

But we learn to become writers by reading, so learn about being a romance writer by reading … romance, light hearted or pornish. Read each book and find the scenes that speak to your emotions, and your fantasies. How do they describe the feel of a man’s hand along your thigh, caressing your back, or jerking you into his arms. Learn how to put the feel of each action into the scene, don’t just tell the reader it happened.  Get your own romance collection. But make it your own. Plagiarism is a capital offence in the writer community.

Humor

Humor can be even harder to portray than passion. We live in a diverse world, with varying senses of humor. Have you ever been at a party and stood with your friends as they doubled over in laughter, all while you looked on in confusion? If liquor wasn’t involved, chances are that you either missed the joke or just didn’t find it funny. Or worse … Have you told a story that brought tears of laughter to your eyes, but looked around to see that your friends were scratching their heads, going over your words, and looking for the humor?? Reading is only the first step to attacking this issue.

Okay. Reading something that you find funny might not help you to impress your friends, but reading something that millions of other readers considered humorous may improve your writing. Humor is just as important as passion, when it comes to adding emotions to your novel. You want your reader to get lost in the worlds you create. If they can feel each scene, then you are on the right track. This is something that I hope to get better and more polished at as I continue to write.

If all else fails, try a comedy club or two. Get in a frame of mind that helps your words to come out in a flowing manner, instead of just dropping a joke into you story now and them. You have to build up to the laugh, like a mini-story within your story. Personally, I don’t even consider what kind of emotion or humor I can add to my story when I’m writing that rough draft. As I bring my story to life I try to see where they are going, how I can build up to that moment when the emotions (no matter if it is passions, anger, failure, gut wrenching sadness, or humor) on the page reach full tilt.

Fighting

fighting

Oooo… Fighting, bloodbaths, all out war… or maybe just a cat-fight. Okay, this one is easy. First you make sure that your annoying neighbor, with the yappy dog, and lack of parking etiquette is home. You do some stretches, get your muscles loose and ready, and then walk over and punch him in the face… see, easy…

What? You think that could lead to jail time, or just finding yourself lying on his doorstep as you watch little cartoon birdies fly around your head. Hmm. Well the other method is much harder. It also involves a great deal of reading, or you could take a martial arts class to learn the feel of some of the moves and defenses. I was lucky enough to take karate classes as a child. That was long ago but some of the motions are hard to forget.

But fighting and violence isn’t just accomplished in a fist fight. You can stripe the hide off of someone’s sense of worth with words a lot easier than you can with a sidekick. I didn’t grow up in a household that contained harsh words, but some of you might be able to call on those memories. Pull them up and use them to leave your reader sobbing and looking for the ice cream, clinching their fists on behalf of your character, or maybe feeling anxiety as you add more turmoil to your character’s life.

This is the hardest emotion for me to bring to my novels. So of course, I practice. The best results come when you hang out with a friend or two and then… Okay, just kidding. This is something that needs to be done in your head, or out loud as you drive down the highway. Alone.

I usually look like an insane person when I’m driving. Sometimes bringing myself to tears with harsh words. Your friends can only help if you sit down and they are willing to have a heart to heart walk down memory lane with you. Otherwise … prepare to look a little loony as you fight with yourself, as you cruise down the highway.

No matter what you decide to write, what you want to bring to your story, how you want to portray your character’s lives and their world… remember to have fun with it. Enjoy what you write, and hopefully others will love it as well. And keep researching… life is about change and growth. Personally, I hope that each year I become better and better at building my worlds.

Happy wordage, Tracey Clark

hope you enjoyed the Pinterest pics… there are all kinds of helpful how-tos on Pinterest…

Said? Update the vocab!

I don’t know about the rest of ya, but I feel a little like I am writing a Dick & Jane primary book when I use ‘Said’ too often in my novels… but then, some peeps believe that ‘Said’ is the only way to go… but just look at all these alternatives… why limit your writing???

e707271ecf9e2e164662350bd1e75ace

I absolutely love Pinterest… there is so much to find… with this list, you can show your characters even more clearly… I have used about half of these naturally, but there are a lot of choices that I never thought of…

as for the authors that believe that ‘Said’ is the best way, I have some favorites that I love to read… even though I disagree, their stories are still enjoyable and re-readable… I love to read my favorites over and over… Slow writing is usually the only way to make me lose interest… so if my go-to authors want to stick with ‘Said’, then to each their own…

I believe that each author needs to follow their own path… there are some rules that all of us need to follow, but the bottom line in writing for me is to always enjoy the creation…

anywho… I am off to play with some of these said-replacements… Happy wordage everyone…

if you want to check out some of my writing you can go to either My Book Site or my Author Page on Pronoun

Watch me write…

like of the nano obsessed… Camp NaNoWriMo is almost halfway over… and this author is nearing 44k words, but hitting that 50k mark isn’t my goal… my goal is to finish both the novels I am working on… then I will have book two and three of the Skymann Series in the rough draft phase, book one (tentatively titled Artistic Beauty) is getting closer to being published… Mary from Gone Writing Publishing is looking it over as we speak…

CNW_Participant

also… Finder’s Keepers book two, Southern Discoveries is getting closer to the finish line… I have a book cover, and am waiting on editor to get back to me… then I will have a publish date (as soon as figure out the self-publishing mechanics…) but the ebook version will be easy as pie to set up… Pronoun.com has a wonderful set up that is easy to use and understand… woo who… as soon as I have a publishing date set in stone, I will do a cover reveal… I love it… my first cover was awesome… but this second one might be even better… I cant wait to show everyone…

the only other news I can think of at the moment is my awesome 25 foot walk at the neurologist… I already stuck this info up on my MS site, but I am so excited I decided to share it with you guys as well… 2 sec time… when I first got sick, my walk was 7+ seconds… each time I improve my time, I feel like I’ve just won a marathon…

4-12-2016 #WritingPrompt – Dream

all writer’s are dreamers… we dream of love, adventure, chaos, heartache, reality, and the unbelievable… we dream up stories and we dream about the readers that will enjoy them… but because I know personally that ‘writer’s depression’ is very real, here are a few quotes and sayings to keep you going… and then back to the writing prompt…

Does your MC have a specific place they go to in order to dream??? like a child’s clubhouse, do they have a place to get away from it all and dream??? do they dream of that perfect vacations or home improvement like an upgraded kitchen??? or maybe a library to beat all libraries???

What does your MC do in order to save up for their dreams??? do they have a system that can add some quirk to your story??? orrrr, if there is evil afoot, what happens when their hard earned savings are stolen???

And finally, I had to add dreamcatchers to the mix… I don’t know much about my Cherokee heritage, but I have always loved dreamcatchers… in a paranormal story, you could have a mystical dreamcatcher that protects your MC from evil… or your dreamcatcher could transport you to another realm… or in a contemporary, you MC could make them… I have had some beautiful ones in my lifetime… play around with it, and give your MC a ‘Dream’….

And for the Pinterest writing prompt, here is something that most people consider the opposite of dreaming… Spring cleaning… does your MC enjoy this yearly task, or do they despise it… do they need help, or do they prefer to take it all on alone… happy wordage, tracey

Self pubbing???

Southern Discoveries…

well … it looks like Finder’s Keepers Book Two : Southern Discoveries will have to be a self pub novel… the first book got some positive attention but not enough for my indie publisher to spend more on book two, even though she read it and enjoyed what she saw… thankfully, she also read my contemporary romance and loved it… so while she helps me to publish my first Skymann novel, I will be learning about self-publishing…

it is my goal to become a hybrid author… getting my books out there through indie publishing, self-publishing, and eventually traditional publishing… one would think that this would be a perfect time to query publishing house to try the traditional route, but I don’t want my readers to have to wait for me to find an agent/publishing house… especially when I fear they will want the rights to the character/series… I would rather try them with a book that doesn’t touch either the Finder’s Keepers novels, or the Skymann novels…

so for now, Southern Discoveries will be in my unknowledgeable hands… wish me luck… I already know how the Ebook format works, but I will have to look into the paper back version… especially since I would like to get both Shocking Finds and Southern Discoveries ordered in paper back for my coming book signings…

okay… I need to go because I have been blogging all night on my Multiple Sclerosis site… and I am exhausted… later guys…

who’s in the birdcage??

1e6db23e7104c3058f0e07d29bf3c1c9

Remember how Snow White had this gift with animals, to the point where she could sing a bird down from the sky to alight on her finger??? Yeah… that sooo didn’t happen here…

I came home from  a diet coke run (omg, I am addicted to diet coke out of a soda fountain) and I walked in to find Tweety’s younger cousin had moved in… how??? who the heck knows… but the cat didn’t care, and refused to help, merely lying back to watch as I ran around in circles…

did I mention that my house  is in a figure eight design… man… and I thought catching the dogs when they were in trouble was a pain… at least the dogs don’t have wings… and since when is an animal with a head smaller than a quarter intelligent… how is that fair?? lol….I opened all the windows and doors… I blocked off rooms… and I ran in circles… every time Tweety 2.0 got near an escape route (to the colder land of the outdoors) he would make a U-turn…

367ddea02ea385be32399dd9c81dab8a

he flew  to the top of the curtains, into the Christmas tree (cause, yes, I am that person that takes things down around the time I need to be putting them back up) and the dang thing even hopped under the bed… at one point, he stopped to rest on mom’s head while she did her best to get in a nap, and ignore all the insanity… lol… I know he was taunting me… I’m not sure why, but eventually, he flew out one of the open doors… Maybe he was full…

Tweety 2.o had managed to get what I thought was a dead (and decayed) stinkbug carcass from somewhere… he then flew under mom’s bed to eat in peace… no big deal… right?? well not until mom groaned, “I smell a stink bug”… evil bird… he was trying to run us out of our own home… sooo yeah… I have no idea why he decided to leave… but clearly it was by choice, and not because of my expert bird skills…

Next time I’m calling this guy… he was in the middle of all the pinterest pics I found about birds, and cages… but clearly, he has a gift… I just hope it works on the smaller ones…

Shocking Finds, by Tracey L Clark to be published

Well, so much excitement … with a heavy dose of OMG. I want to run up and down the street like a wild woman, screaming “My book is coming, my book is coming!!!” I am so overwhelmed, anxious, filled with nerves and enough happiness to split my face in half with my grin.

a6e54b934300a5427760aafb29a05e2f

Soooo, now what? Well, my job is done. Right? I can take my best bud and move to my own personal island. I can grab some me time, and finally relax as I watch all the copies of my world-changing book fly off the shelf. I can plan out my next step with leisure. HA!

I don’t know what will come next. Not really. But I know that the world of books doesn’t end when a publisher takes interest. For now, I plan to start edits on books two and three. I plan to cross my fingers that the world enjoys Shocking Finds: A Finder’s Keepers Novel. And above all else … I plan to follow my publisher’s lead. She is the expert here, in this frightening world. I can’t wait to yell out, “I sold my first book!!” I think that first book sale will feel like that first dollar that new business owners have framed up on their wall. But to get to the point that I get to grin about book sales, I need to follow and learn from Mary at http://gonewritingpublishing.blogspot.com/

Now it is back to the keyboard. Now I beg for reviews from the betas that helped me to get to this point. I squeal with joy with my writing buddies that have had my back when I believed that no one would ever want to take a chance on a girl with nothing to list in the accomplishments area of an evil query letter. Now I go out to celebrate with my mother and the friends that continued to tell me that my story had merit. Now, I promote and get ready to ride the roller coaster to come. So many people helped to push me up high enough to reach my goal. The writing world is a wonderful place. I have been extremely lucky to find fellow wordy friends, while embracing the support from home.

I don’t know how other writers do this. How do we face the unknown as we place our hard work in the hands of others? I hope that every lover of Paranormal/Fantasy Romance finds their way to my novel, and that they enjoy the world unfolding around Marin. If they enjoy the Fae assassins, snotty little Sprite, and the romantic leading man (Kyland) half as much as I enjoyed writing about them, then that will be a gift. With each review that I read about the love a reader has found for my writing, I want to start my sprints down the street all over again. So far I have had nothing but positive words coming my way, and I have treasured each and every comment.

I hope the crushing blow of the unavoidable negative review (because not every book lover, loves in the same way) doesn’t come for years. Hey, maybe even decades… 😛 For now, it is back to my wonderful worlds. Maybe I can write a few shorts to cleanse my writing palate. Like stretches before the big race. Maybe I will explore mystical castles, the world of dragons, or even the descent into the unknown.

I can’t wait to start sharing things like my first book cover, the release date (which should be sometime in the coming Fall), and all the updates on future insanity. Cause you know there will be insanity. But the good kind of insanity, the kind that leads to laughter and an extra chapter or two in my next novel. For now, how about one of my favorite moments from Shocking Finds….

—-excerpt—

Being forced to play chauffeur already had Anton on edge. The little gift in his trunk was going to push him over the edge. Kyland hid his grin in Marin’s hair.

Straightening in his seat, Kyland allowed Anton to see his smirk, as their eyes met in the rearview mirror. “You may wish to drive faster. Arriving at Marin’s before the present in your trunk is fully awake could prove prudent.” At least Kyland had a base line for how long his sleeping draft would last.

“What do you mean? What present? And why my trunk?” Anton sure had a lot of questions, but at least he drove a little faster.

“I needed to transport him back to Marin’s house, and your car was unlocked.”

“It most certainly was not, you Battle-Fae-Bastard.” Anton was vibrating with tension.

“It was after I broke in.” And, okay, Kyland was enjoying himself. He felt lighter, more energetic.

Anton stared into the mirror, shock and anger plain on his face. Before he could speak, and possibly ruin their lovely drive, Kyland added, “I do not know what the big deal is. Marin blew out the rest of the windows, and I needed to open the trunk.” Kyland smirked and then happily pointed out, “Watch the road, or at least that tree blocking our way.”

bloggers thanking bloggers

I know that a lot of people hate anything that reminds them of chain letters, so I will try to spice my 7 tidbits (all about me) up a little ( 😛 spoiler: there may be a cowboy picture or two) and keep the fun flowing as I pass this award along to the most recent commenters that have been helpful/engaging/or just plain awesome…..

* Present 15 awards to deserving bloggers.
* Drop them a comment to tip them off after you’ve linked them in the post.
* Post 7 interesting things about yourself.
All about ME:
Let’s start with the seven things about Tracey, that I will try to make interesting to all. Hummmm … where to start. Well since I added that race track photo to the top, why not start off with horse. I love horses. I love to ride them (though it has been years), especially run. To be on top of a horse as he flies across the ground, it feels like you’re the one flying. Everything about the animals speaks of majestic strength, of power. Being on top of one, you get to be included in that power, if only for a little while.

*pics from trip to boyd county fare
Number two on my list … I’m gonna go with cowboys. I blame this on Lorelei James and her rough rider series. lol. Just lover her cowboy romances. Though it could also have something to do with the fact that I am a Kentucky girl. Cowboys and other men that work farms or with animals are just plain sexy. 😛 One day, I plan to write a contemporary/cowboy romance. But for now I will stick to my Fantasy/paranormal romances. I will edit the ba-zillion rough drafts until I want to scream, and then watch out. Here come the Cowboys.

For your third viewing pleasure, let’s look at some beach pictures. Although I have been to many different sandy shores, in both the heat and the cold, I am not a beach fan. I love the beautiful views to be found, buuutttt … Sand and Sharks, people. Sand and Sharks. I hate and fear them both. I firmly that sand has a mind of its own, and is more dangerous than the ever hungry shark. As soon as you enter the city holding your chosen beach destination, the sand goes to work. Without getting out of the car, you will start to feel the creeping, abrasive, sneaky sandy hands. Heaven help you if you are brave enough to go swimming. I always come out of the water (ocean or pool) with sand taking up residence inside my bathing suit. With shark, I would just like to eat one of them before they get me. At least them I will kinda deserve it. (at least in the sharks mind) lol

*my sunset/sunrise pics
On to number four … When I need a break from my characters and the worlds that the voices demand I continue to build and expand, I turn to crafts. Mostly, I experiment with oil paints. I enjoy the way you can blend and change the canvas. Plus, even if you use a drying agent, mixed in with your paints, you have at least three days to change your creation. Oils are very forgiving of mistakes. 😛 My other main craft revolves around yarn. Hats, scarves … stuffed animals, baby clothes … I will try anything. Everyone should include some form of arts and/or crafts in their life. Make sure that you use both sides of your brain, not just the fact based side 😛

*keep trying until you find your stress relief
Alrighty! Moving on to interesting fact number five. (I feel like I am on a dating site … lol) Anywho. I would say that my travel history is pretty interesting. I have been to beaches from the west to the east (see fact three). I have been to different Kentucky areas for singing competitions. As a teen I went on one of those Eruo tours, visiting France, London, Germany, Switzerland, etc… I have seen castles and homesteads from the 1800’s, I have gone cliff diving (very little cliff, not to dare devilish), and I have gone deep sea snorkeling. And still there is so much I want to see and do. Seeing and experiencing the world around me is very important to my life. I want to take in as much as I can.

*I need to start taking more pics
Two facts left. For number six, I will go with … Animals. I love them all. In fact, every time I go on a trip, I pick an animal to associate with that adventure. In Switzerland, I chose the mountain goat. I loved taking a tram up into the mountains and seeing them perched so perfectly on the rocky cliff face. At the beach, I usually go with an alligator. Most would probably go with sharks, but when I was small, I saw an alligator snatch a bird for his dinner. I have some charms for a bracelet of a necklace with representations of my vacations animal picks.

*alligator pic came from pinterest (need to get one of my own)
Lastly, but not least … I have MS (multiple sclerosis) but I refuse to stop me from living. I want to be apart of the world, not just sit on the sidelines and watch. I may not move at the same pace as others, or accomplish everything in a timely manner, but eventually get to the places I want to be. I have learned to work with my MS, instead of being smothered by it. When I wake up, I ask myself what I want to accomplish. Then I stop to think, what CAN I accomplish. If I’m having a bad day, I know that whatever I want to do isn’t out of the questions. I just need to wait and see if tomorrow will let me do more. This process has allowed me to become a new person, when I thought all had been lost. I avoid things that hurt my head, and take life one day at a time. I have event finished one novel that I am in the process of talking to a publisher about, and I have half a dozen other rough draft (but dang, the editing process vs my MS and dyslexia … let’s just say time consuming).

Find your Inspiration

Camp-Winner-2015-Web-Banner

Where do you find your Inspiration???

For years, I wrote down my ideas and worked on my outlines and rough drafts, but that was all. I looked down and had dozens of both, but unless I wanted to build another room to house my ideas, I needed to finish this and edit that. It was a moment of ‘omg, where do I start…’ and I didn’t have a clue. Then I saw something on twitter about National Writers Month (#NaNoWriMo). The organization is great. They have the main event in Nov. for #NaNoWriMo, and camp comes in july (#campnanowrimo) … I think there is even a month dedicated to the junior wordmonger.

But what do you need, what do you get out of it, and why should you bother???

hummmm…

Hey, this may be camp, but that doesn’t mean you have to go outdoors. I mean, l love nature and all the beautiful landscapes that are available … but … bugs. I said it, bugs. I am too old to fight off bugs, use natures outhouse (or even a camp restroom), and sleep on the hard unforgiving ground.

Even those lovely foldout beds, that can be put into place with the ease of a lawn chair, is a no-go for this Kentucky gal. I want to ride the horses, wade in the stream, take some amazing photos … and then go home. So indoor camp is it for me. Plus, s’mores can be made anywhere. yummmm. A bottle of wine, a bag of goodies, and some upclass camp junk food. Dang, now I’m hungry.

But camp isn’t about the food, or the bedding. It’s about the people. I am still friends with the first two women I met at camp, a Canadian word-lover and an Ohio wordsmith.  We still get on Facebook to chat, trash talk, and when needed … we support each other in our current projects. So the inspiration you can find at CampNaNoWriMo, or one of the similar online get togethers, is something that you can take with you. Something that you can depend on throughout the year, not just the month that you bust your arse to reach that 50k word goal line. Even if you never reach 50k words, the connections and friends are important.

But just because I enjoy my comforts (the bed is sooo not mine), don’t think I miss out on the wildlife… say hello to Froggy Assassin in the picture below …..

Writing is a solitary event for the most part. But every once in a while it is good to get out of you writer’s cave, take a look around, and stretch your legs. We have to go out in the world in order to keep the ideas and voices flowing. Stroll through the local fruit market, wonder around the towns surrounding chosen vacation spot, or my favorite outdoor activity … stop at a random exit. When I’m coming home from some roadtrip or out of town necessity, I watch the signs that promote the attractions for the upcoming exits. My last trip ended with a stop along the Ky-Tn border. Mom and I stopped for lunch at this little outdoor museum. They had houses from the old days, and lots of animals walking around. The little store had some of the crafts from the area, and the back of the store housed a little deli with homemade goodies. We had some of the best cobbler I have ever tasted, and I’m not normally a cobbler lover.

In essences, inspirations can be found anywhere. Indoors and out, you just need to be open to trying something new. You can tackle the word sprints with your NaNoWriMo camp mates, or soak up the off the beaten path attractions. Just have fun, and then write it down… 😛 … Happy Wordage, Tracey Clark

Here are some of the photos from my off the beaten path stop…
