This is definitely a contemporary romance I would love to read… right to the TBR list…

4f91f3ce4c7881d2659e6ff6df7af196

I love the following blurb… only thing that could make it better would be if Mitch was a cowboy… but hey… it is set in southern California ??? could there be cowboys hiding in these pages???

Children’s librarian Amanda Lloyd values privacy above all else. Three years ago her wedding ended in disaster when her groom was arrested at the altar and the story of the ‘Embezzler’s Bride’ appeared in the supermarket tabloids. The experience has left her determined to avoid being caught in the public eye again. Until she meets a sexy single dad with a scandalous past…

Ex-racer Mitch Delaney is a public figure whose life has been plastered across the tabloids more than once. But he believes that anything worth doing is worth a risk. After the death of his ex-wife, he moved to Southern California to take care of his son Josh. He doesn’t need the complication of a woman in his life, especially since Josh’s grandparents have filed suit for custody. But Josh is on the hunt for a new mother and he has his heart set on Miss Amanda, and Mitch can’t fault his son’s taste.

Against her better judgment, Amanda finds herself falling for both of the Delaney men. When she agrees to accompany Mitch to a high-profile movie premiere, they draw the attention of the tabloids. Overnight Amanda’s private affair becomes very public indeed, threatening her job and Mitch’s custody suit. She’s waited twenty-eight years for the right man. But will happiness come at too high a price?

Eggcerpt:

The town was lovely, with tall palm trees and a sandy crescent of beach ringing the glistening bay. It was a picture perfect day as they strolled along the waterfront to one of her favorite seafood restaurants.

After a delicious lunch of fresh swordfish they walked the town, stopping at all the tourist spots. They hiked up to the botanical gardens, visited the Casino where haunting echoes of the Big Band era seemed still alive, and went on the Glass Bottom boat.

“Let’s take a walk on the beach,” Mitch suggested as they stepped onto the pier.

They shed their shoes and socks, enjoying the feel of the warm sand on their toes. Amanda breathed deeply of the sea air and sighed in contentment.

“It’s been such a nice day, I hate to go home,” Mitch observed.

“You just don’t want to get back in the plane,” she teased.

“On the contrary, I can’t wait to take off over that drop-off gorge. I hope it doesn’t leave Josh fatherless.”

“You don’t have any confidence in me.”

“I haven’t booked passage on the boat, have I? You can’t get rid of me that easily.”

He gave her a look that told her the man loved a touch of danger. Her plan had backfired. Instead of discouraging him, he seemed even more interested. That should bother her, but somehow it didn’t.

“I’ve really enjoyed this.” He gestured at the town. “It’s like another world.”

She nodded in agreement. “That’s the reason I enjoy flying over here. It’s so easy to forget about the stress of daily life.”

He slipped his arm around her shoulders. “What kind of pressure are you going back to at the library?”

The pressure is right here. She was constantly fighting her attraction to this man. “Nothing really,” she remarked casually. “We’re getting ready for Halloween and I’ve got to get a costume together. I’m supposed to be Sleeping Beauty.”

“Oh? That has possibilities.” He leaned closer so his lips brushed her temple. His throaty voice whispered in her ear, “You’ll need a prince to kiss you awake, you know. I’ll be happy to volunteer for the job.”

Amanda’s breath quickened as she stared into his darkened eyes. He wouldn’t. Not here, on a public beach, in front of everyone.

He would.

She felt her knees weaken as his mouth descended. Her mind told her to pull away but her body had no desire to back out of his embrace. His kiss was as light and tender as an ocean breeze, but her reaction was anything but cool. Her pulse pounded and her heart jumped erratically.

It’s just a kiss, she told herself. But even as they pulled apart she felt a burning desire, an aching need, to feel his arms around her.

#EggcerptExchange – Michelle Abbott

eggs

another excellent cover… another author for the exchange!!!

25ea6471cfdc1d807ff46752cbc53598

the cover really is the first line when trying to promote a book… I know that I look for certain things *(hot guys, or strong women) before I ever check out the back of a book… if the cover sucks, I soooo am not wasting time one the blurb…

Abbott

Love the tattoos… yep, the great body has nothing to do with it, I swear… hehehe… okay… lets read a little about the author and the book… and don’t forget the Excerpt and Q&A character session….

Author Michelle Abbott writes new adult romance. She currently has four books published.

JEM

Two injured, stubborn souls meet unexpectedly. Will they save each other from their demons or have they been too damaged for too long to see past the pain?

Growing up, all Jem knew was hatred and the pain from his father’s fists. Taunted by the kids at school, he was alone, until a girl with carrot coloured hair sat next to him.

She smiled.
She listened.
She cared.

She was his angel, and he knew he’d love her forever. But Jem’s father hurts him in a way he never expected by taking him away from her.

Now eighteen, scarred inside and out, Jem trusts no one and has worked hard to ensure he’ll never be helpless again. But then he runs into his angel. The only problem is she doesn’t recognize him. Jem needs her to remember him, to show him that their time together meant to her what it did to him. For once in his life he wants to have mattered to someone, to her.

Devon is attracted to the muscular, tattooed, pierced hottie standing by the pub quiz machine. That is, until he punches a guy clean across the bar for daring to touch him. She’s had her fill of violent men and intends to avoid this one at all costs.

Eggcerpt from JEM

I pull back the duvet and try to make as few movements as possible as I crawl in beside her and let the warmth from her body and the duvet envelop me. Her red hair is splayed across my pillow. I reach out and stroke my fingers through the silken strands. My pillowcase isn’t getting washed again. It can smell of her forever so that whenever I lay my head on it, I can pretend she’s with me. Maybe it will be okay to move a little closer. I’m right on the edge of the mattress. If I fall out of bed I’ll wake her. I scoot closer to her, close my eyes and inhale. She smells of roses. Maybe I should get her some flowers. I picture myself holding a bunch of red roses and chuckle to myself. Nah, I’m not the suave type. Maybe I’ll get a rose tattoo to remind me of her scent.

Interview with Jem1.

Job?I work at an amusement arcade, fixing the machines when they go wrong, handing out change and that kind of thing. It pays my bills, it’s local and the hours suit me.

2. Currently residing in…?Hemsby in Norfolk. I’ve got a trailer right by the sea. There’s nothing like walking along the beach every morning. It keeps me calm.

3. Level of schooling, or self-taught?I had to quit school when I was small because my asshole of a father moved us all at the last minute after someone reported him to social services for child cruelty. He never enrolled me in another school. I taught myself all I need to know.

4. Favorite food?Don’t have one. I eat to live, I don’t live to eat.

5. Most important goal?To get Devon to remember me and love me again. To take care of her and show her that I never forgot her and never stopped loving her.

Michelle Abbott lives in the UK and hates describing herself in 3rd person.

She loves to write new adult romance about heroes who begin as the underdog and are protective of their girl.

She’s an avid reader of romance, is addicted to coffee and loves wine and chocolate, so yeah, not the most healthy eating and drinking habits 🙂 She spends way too much time online when she should be writing. She collects teddy bears and occasionally knits a couple of rows on a sweater she started years ago, which she may eventually finish in time to wear for her funeral 🙂Website http://www.michelleabbott.com/Twitter https://twitter.com/michelleabbott4Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MichelleAbbottRomanceAuthorGoodreads https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7034278.Michelle_Abbott

Skymann Family

a while back, I decided to try my hand at a contemporary romance… but then I got sidetracked with my Finder’s Keepers series, and all the possibilities that line of thinking opened up… So in OCD fashion I wrote until my eyes crossed, forgetting about my Skymann Family novel… it was finished and just waiting for those evil edits… this morning I decided to tackle the Skymann edits head on… muhahahaha

e2ff9c5d83ae2b06eb3efe8d2991c157

I think I have a few more hours in me tonight, but so far, I am only 25 percent of the way through… but this is just the first go… I figure it will take another two to three weeks to get opinions and edits completely… if things go smoothly, I may be able to pull this off a little faster than that… I really do love my Skymann clan… they are some good ole’ boys, with a horrible past, but they have known how to take advantage of opportunity when it comes knockin’…

Four brother; Marcus – the oldest, Samuel – the youngest, and in the middle we have Jacob and Andrew – twins… I don’t know if you guys have ever had friends that seemed to be produced from some kind of mold, where all the siblings could have been produced as clones… I had this friend in high school and I swear that her older sister could have been her twin.. It was freaky… and I don’t mean the slight similarities you get from strong genes… I have heard all my life that my aunts and momma look just alike, but I can see a difference…

that wasn’t true with my friend… I walked into her house and saw a picture of her sister for the first time, and I stood there staring, trying to decide why my friend’s picture looked off… it wasn’t until she told me it wasn’t her that I found out I was looking at someone else… her older clone… yep… very weird…

but I liked the idea for a story… in the Skymann family, you have some cousins that similar in that way that strong genes will let you know that someone is related … but with the brothers, I used what I had seen in that picture of my friend’s older sister… clones… okay, not really clones, but they all four look enough alike for people that don’t know them personally to get confused…

that’s what happens in this first story… Andrew – one of the twins, screws up while trying to ask out Brigit… then she runs into Samuel, and he is too cocky for words, and aggravates the hell out of her because she thinks it is Andrew… then, to make matters even worse, she runs into a laid back Marcus… Poor Marcus… by then she has had enough… thankfully, Jacob finds a way to meddle in Andrew’s life, to find a way to convince Brigit to give him a shot… Andrew will finally get the girl, that’s if her stalker doesn’t get her first… muhahahaha

Hopefully, this will keep my mind occupied while I wait to hear what my publisher thinks about Southern Discoveries: Book Two – Finder’s Keepers… and yes, I think I have finally settled on a title…. Twin Findings just felt like it needed to be the title of book three or four… okay, back to the edits…

ARE YOU A PLOTTER OR PANTSER?

I’m a pantser all the way. I’ve taken numerous courses on plotting because in theory it sounds easier. Build an outline, add elements of GMC (goal, motivation, and conflict) and you’re off to the races. For me, it comes off feeling forced. I lose my flow. So now I just let the words appear organically, sometimes that can be pages in a day, sometimes only a paragraph or two, but it works for me.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE?

I’ve always had a love of reading. As I grew older it developed into a dream of seeing my name on the front cover of a book. That’s the biggest joy for me, hearing that people enjoy my writing.

WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN YOU SOLD YOUR FIRST BOOK?

Threw a party!! No seriously, I shared it all over social media. There’s such a euphoric feeling to accomplishing a goal you’ve set for yourself that I think the first reaction is to want to share the good news.

WHAT IS THE FIRST BOOK YOU REMEMBER READING?

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell told first person from the horse’s perspective. One of the most heartbreakingly powerful novels I’ve ever read.

The Sheriff Meets His Match by Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Contemporary romance

When a jaded sheriff is drawn to an exasperating woman in trouble, anything can happen

Laurel Thomas has always experienced life from the outside looking in. She likes the warm welcome she’s received in Tidal Falls and wants to make a home in this friendly little town, far away from her egocentric family. But then her uncle arrives and she learns the past has a way of catching up to her.

Jack Garrett is satisfied with his uncomplicated life. He has a good job as the sheriff of his hometown, a nice home, and a beautiful teenage daughter. So why is he struggling against his attraction for the disorganized new hire at the department, Laurel Thomas? She threatens everything he’s worked so hard to avoid—like falling in love.

Can two people with enough emotional baggage to sink a ship find a way to give each other a chance, or is this match doomed to drown?

Excerpt:

“Are you going to answer me?” That voice. The deep, dark, mesmerizing timbre of his voice had featured in more than a few of Laurel’s overnight fantasies of late. Combine that with a body built like a tank and a set of handcuffs and…

Miss Thomas.”

His impatience woke her up to her very real predicament. Either she came up with a plausible answer now, or she could very likely end up spending the night in an interrogation room. Not that she would mind sharing a room with the big bad sheriff, but one with a bed would be preferable. Wait, did she really just think that? Obviously, it’d been too long since she had a meaningful relationship—hashtag sex.

hopefully, after the signing I will have more information about buy links and a picture of the cover… I do know that my short story was a wee bit long, which caused my fellow writer (Cathy) to need to shorten it a little… she had to cut out some of the less important bits… still… it is an excellent way to learn more about Joffrey, a Sentinel… Joffrey has a bigger part in book two of the Finder’s Keepers series… Southern Discoveries (and yes, I hope I am done messing with my title… lol)

Book blurb: Kia Deering is a normal teenage girl looking forward to celebrating her 18th birthday in style. What she didn’t anticipate was the revelation that would change her life beyond recognition.

The Goddess Assaie fell for a human and gave up everything, including her identity, to be with him, sacrificing everything she ever knew in the name of true love.

When Kia discovered she was a descendant of the Goddess she had a year to embrace all that it meant or to turn her back on her destiny forever.

Kia had always believed herself to be ordinary but now she was extraordinary she had no idea if she could handle the potential of the power within her. Perhaps the handsome young man she meets in a nightclub could be the distraction she needed, or perhaps he will open up a whole new set of questions himself.

Egg-cerpt:

While Sofia fumbled in her bag for her mobile phone Kia raced around to the front of the car. From the back seat she hadn’t been able to see the other vehicle which it appeared they had hit side on, crushing both the driver’s door and the front of the taxi. The driver, and sole occupant, of the other vehicle was motionless, blood covering his face as it ran freely from a large cut in his forehead.

“Are you all right?” She shouted, the driver’s eyes flickering open in acknowledgement. “It’s okay, we’ve called an ambulance… just stay where you are.”

Racing around to the driver’s side of the taxi Kia stopped dead, the taxi driver was sprawled across the road before the car, his leg at a painfully unnatural angle, his body bloodied from the many cuts he sustained from the windscreen’s glass. The thing that made Kia stop and take a deep breath however were his eyes, they were now wide open and staring up at the sky unblinking, they showed no sign of life.

Approaching him slowly Kia took some deep steadying breaths, she had taken a few first aid courses in college but nothing could have prepared her for this.

“Hello?” She said as she crouched down beside him. “Hello can you hear me?”

Getting no reaction Kia reached out a hand and gently shook the taxi driver’s shoulder.

“Hello?” She said again, already knowing that it was too late for him to ever hear her again but unable to stop trying. “Please be all right… hello?”

Kneeling down closer to the driver Kia leaned over, holding her hair back, as she tried to listen for any sounds of breath but there were none, his eyes still stared lifelessly at the sky.

“What do I do?” Kia said quietly to herself as tears began to fill her eyes. This was not the way her birthday was supposed to end and she was certain that the taxi driver hadn’t anticipated such a final end to his evening either.

Unable to do anything else Kia took hold of the driver’s hand gently and closed her eyes. It didn’t seem right to just leave him.

She didn’t notice the burning sensation in her palm at first as her body was already full of aches from the collision but after a few minutes it was impossible to ignore and her eyes shot open to look down at the hand that held onto that of the driver. Kia wasn’t certain but she thought she could see a strange white glow around their hands and then, as quickly as it started, the pain faded away and seconds later so did the glow.

Shaking her head to clear her thoughts Kia decided she was imagining things due to the stress of the accident.

Then the driver began to cough.

“What happened?” He asked, rubbing his free hand over his face as he straightened the leg that moments ago had seemed irrevocably broken.

“Accident,” Kia said, unable to form any more coherent words than that, relief flooding her body at the sound of the ambulance sirens rapidly approaching.

Time to get to know a little more about Kia Deering with this questionnaire:

1. Nickname: My name is a little short to do much with, but friends do sometimes just call me ?K?
2. Job: I’m currently a student, I was going to get a part time job to help out but mum wouldn’t hear of it.
3. Level of schooling, or self-taught: That’s still ongoing!
4. Birthdate: August 19th – summer birthdays are the best
5. Birthplace: A little town you wouldn’t have heard of ? nowhere very exciting I’m afraid
6. Currently residing in: Still living at home with my mum
7. Favourite type of pet: I don’t have one myself, but who can resist a puppy? I have to have a cuddle any

#GWP peep… Jeri Williams

Okay… Jeri Williams is awesome… she is one of the wonderful authors I have been introduced to through our Publisher, Mary Smith, over at Gone Writing Publishing… I read her novel Breathe Me and can’t wait to dive into Hurt Me…

27d567a3d73ce4da7757538868fb419f

Jeri brings two damaged people, and spares no truths… she makes her characters as real as she possibly can, and manages to tell a realistic story about what happens when two such souls meet each other… Just for fun, I am going to tack my review of Breathe Me to the end of this post just in case anyone is interested… happy wordage…. tracey

In the highly anticipated continuation of Harley and Deklan’s story comes an equally gripping novel.

HMFBCover.v1

Blurp:

What happens when you wake up from the nightmare that you’ve been living? Do you start living a happy normal life, one that you’ve always dreamed of, or do you start a new nightmare?
Harley did it. She survived, thanks to Deklan, but now…she is left with hard truths and different emotions; what she thought was the end, was only the beginning. Harley has to navigate through these changes while deciding on who she is and where she fits in Deklan’s life because she is coming to learn that when someone saves you, even from yourself, you hero worship them. You hero worship them so much they become your everything. Their wants turn into your needs, their needs into your obsessions, their obsessions into your life. Finally you come to a point where this worshiping, this obsession, will either heal you or hurt you.
Will Harley be healed from her past or hurt by it?

HurtMe.Ebook.Amazon

Excerpt:

My thoughts are so mixed up it’s causing my head to swim.

Thoughts.

Thoughts.

Thoughts help people process things, they form into actions, ideas or opinions and are supposed to be helpful. My thoughts are helpful in letting me know my thighs are ugly, my hair is too limp and dull, my eyes too far apart, my nails are chipped and broken, my skin rough and my body is disgusting. My thoughts, these thoughts are always with me like a scratched CD, repeating the same thing over and over. They solidify my reasons for feeling the way I do, which I can’t put into words, so I say nothing, I do nothing, I feel nothing. The only time I feel is when Deklan is moving deep inside of me, whispering things in my ear, holding me close smothering out all the bad thoughts in my head. Only then do I feel.

I feel what I do to him, his body shaking as he brings both of us to our breaking point. I feel his grip on me tighten, like he will never let me go, his heart pounding as he’s about to explode inside me, I feel everything in that moment; hope, pain, love, sorrow, grief, anger, happiness, I feel all of it with him.

I feel him.

I read somewhere that people need people. Weather is was implying that they need contact, affection, companionship or just interaction that statement could not hold more true to me than now. I need Deklan, need him like the air I breathe, like the water I drink or the food I pretend to eat. I need him. I know he needs me too, maybe not as much but he does. And it’s scary because, one day he won’t need me and I’ll have to let him go, still needing him. And that will break me for good.

About the Author:

me

Jeri Williams lives a super fabulous lifestyle (by fabulous, she mean’s kinda lame) in the hot Florida sun and loves reading of any kind (except instruction manuals and cereal boxes). She has always written stories and made her family listen to them since she was young, although this is her first book she has ever published. She is a mom of an up-and-coming Jerry Seinfeld (in girl form) and also enjoys being right and knowing everything, although she is hardly ever right and really doesn’t know anything and is obsessed with inventing miniature zoo animals you can carry around in your pocket (although not really).

Jeri Williams.v2

My Review of Breathe Me….

I would give this between a 3 and a 4… but definitely closer to 4… Williams spins a tale of truth, hard truth… she gets in the mind set of children everywhere… because no matter if we have excellent parents or scum of the earth parents, we all want our mother/father to love us… the one person in most of our lives that we are willing to forgive almost anything (no matter how awful) is our mother/father… a child will walk on egg shells, not understanding what they did wrong or how they can make sure to make mommy/daddy smile… how they can get the one ounce of praise…

while not all people react the same to this type of environment, there are enough case to consider it common for a child to protect and strive for love from an unloving parent… Williams captures this issues and brings in an unlikely hero to save the day… she gives us two damaged people finding there road to peace… (hopefully) I will have to tune in to the next novel to see where the road goes…

Author bio:

Carmen Stefanescu resides in Romania, the native country of the infamous vampire Count Dracula, but where, for about 50 years of communist dictatorship, just speaking about God, faith, reincarnation or paranormal phenomena could have led someone to great trouble – the psychiatric hospital if not to prison.
Teacher of English and German in her native country and mother of two daughters, Carmen Stefanescu survived the grim years of oppression, by escaping in a parallel world, that of the books.

She has dreamed all her life to become a writer, but many of the things she wrote during those years remained just drawer projects. The fall of the Ceausescu’s regime in 1989, and the opening of the country to the world meant a new beginning for her. She started publishing. Poems first, and then prose. Both in English.

Shadows of the Past, paranormal/light romance/light mystery/light horror was released at the end of 2012 by Wild Child publishing, USA.

Excerpt

Shadows of the Past

Carmen Stefanescu

The peal of the church bells from the abbey tower startled Genevieve. The sound added to her mounting anxiety.

The massive abbey loomed over the stone paved path. All the nuns were at evening mass. With a bit of luck her disappearance would go unnoticed for a few more hours. The Abbess would assume she was cleaning the toilets as ordered.

Fear skittered through Genevieve when she turned away from the abbey towards the path leading to town. Nothing stirred. She hesitated. Evil emanated from the forest surrounding the abbey. With a shiver, she leaned against the solid oak gates that flanked the abbey’s main path. They had hidden her from detection for the past couple of hours, but how much longer would she be safe?

The mountain shadows grew thicker and closer.

She moved her weight from one leg to the other. They ached from so much standing, but she lacked the strength to return to the gardener’s cottage and wait for Andrew’s arrival as planned. Genevieve closed her tired eyes. The image of old Ryan, slumped dead in his chair in his cubicle, caught life in her mind and made her whole body ripple with fear.

She’d rather wait for Andrew here, outside.

Had he forgotten his promise? What if something terrible befell him during the last three days, or he had changed his mind? Why should he risk all for an ordinary nun?

Had his folks talked him into giving her up, made him see reason? Helping her out of her predicament meant a huge risk for him — losing his family, his friends and his position among his peers. His words echoed in her mind. “I will risk everything for you, even life, if necessary.”

* * * *

“Anne, Anne, wake up. Wake up, please,” the insistent voice whispered next to her ear. The touch of a hand, on her shoulder, startled Anne.

She opened her eyes, still half between sleep and reality. Her gaze stopped on a stranger, a woman, by her side.

The moon’s pale face, the only light, filtered through a small gap in the tent’s entrance; yet the stranger’s whole body emanated a kind of soft ray, a yellowish halo making her figure and face easy to discern.

A long, dark robe, similar to those worn by nuns in monasteries centuries ago, covered her body. No traditional headdress covered the woman’s red hair, which fell loosely over her shoulders in long, heavy tendrils and continued down her chest and back.

Anne stood up and studied the intruder with open curiosity. The stranger’s wax pale face looked corpse like. Anne opened her mouth to ask her who she was. She looked Anne straight in the eyes, placed her forefinger on her lips and whispered, “Hush, come. Follow me.”

Anne’s eyes widened.

The woman, moving away from the sleeping bag, appeared to glide above the ground. Her bare feet didn’t make a sound.

As if hypnotized, Anne followed the illuminated silhouette heading into the forest, without questioning her own actions.

An onrush of sensations unfamiliar to her followed. Dizziness and a malevolent feeling of unreality suffocated her. The presence of evil, creeping up and enveloping her, became almost palpable. Her throat turned dry, and she gasped for air.

——-

1. Please, have a seat. Make yourself comfortable Miss…

“Genevieve. My name is Genevieve, but Sister Clementa, the Abbess, and some of her followers call me The witch.”

2. Tell me, Genevieve, where are you living?

Genevieve ( a small sigh escapes her lips. Then she shrugs) “Well, for the moment I reside at St. Mary’s Abbey. On top of a mountain in Britain, in the…cursed forest.”

3. Do you have any schooling?

Genevieve (nods and pats and invisible crease of her dress) “Kind Old Bertha, who took care of me after my family perished, taught me to read and write. Not only English but also Latin. And, most important, she taught me how to prepare healing potions from plants and herbs. Perhaps that’s why the Abbess hates me so much. A peasant girl of the 13th century is dangerous if she knows more than her superiors, I think.”

4. What are your worst fears or nightmare?

Genevieve (throws a shy look around her. She shivers and her voice is small) “I fear the cursed forest. This forest is responsible for what happened to my family. My father’s odd behavior, the death of my siblings. All the evil that lurks in it.

My nightmare – the Abbess, sister Clementa, who threatens me all the time with sending me to the stake. I can’t understand why she wants me out of the way.”

5. Is it anything that you secretly desire?

Genevieve (blushes and wrings her hands. Then she looks me directly in the eyes. Her voice is strong now. ) “To become Andrew’s wife and grow a family. If his family agrees….If the Abbess lets me go… If God forgives me for giving up being a nun…..If I escape alive from the forest…. If….”

I am actually posting to give a shout out to Yasmine Phoenix… about a year or so ago, she did a post with a handful of authors in various stages of their wordage lives… the hopeful, the multi-published, and those in between… and every once in a while she sends us some questions, a type of update… to see where we are in our writing journeys…

now, my memory is lacking on the best of days, but I am pretty sure that this is the third post that Yasmine has done on the topic… if you want to check out her post, just follow the link below….

Having a day of Poetry w/ Scott Hastie

AV008A

I thought that it would be wonderful to take a day for poetry, and Scott Hastie was kind enough to drop by… although I love poetry, it has been a long time since I have put down any lines of my own… there was a time when the only writing it did came in the form of a poem… it was easier with my dyslexia to spin my tales in this shortened format… it was something that I could share with my mother and grandfather… these days I focus more on novels and short stories (oh do I hate the edits) but poetry will always hold a special place in my heart… and without further ado, lets learn a little about Scott Hastie…

Author Bio:

Scott Hastie

Scott Hastie is a successful British born poet and writer, who has been has been commercially published in the UK for over twenty years now. He currently has ten titles in print, including a novel and four collections of poetry. In recent years, the spiritual tone in his unique poetic voice is starting to draw increasing attention from a worldwide audience, especially in the U.S. India & the Middle East.

Published in both print & e editions in 2014, Angel Voices was then his most substantial publication to date, featuring over 40 new poems never before seen, either in print or on the net. This title building much more on the mature poetic voice that first began to emerge in Scott’s previous title Meditations and featuring ALL readers favourites, as showcased on his popular website. For much more info and some spectacular reviews for Angel Voices (as well as direct non-trade order options and deals…) go to www.scotthastie.com

What’s more, with interest continuing to build fast, plans are now already afoot for the release of a sparkling new collection of Scott’s poetry: Threads – currently in production and scheduled for release in this Spring! This already considered to be his landmark achievement to date, looking as it does to further develop the spiritual themes in his work and with key feature pieces already widely translated and published to worldwide acclaim.

Fortunately, it is still very easy to dip into Scott’s poetry at his highly visual and internationally popular new web site, which freely displays samples of both his already published and latest unpublished work. As a writer, Scott is very open and likes to encourage maximum participation and feedback from his readers.

His web site offers the chance to post comments, both on individual pieces or more generally, if you wish… And also encourages dialogue about writing. Scott offers mentoring services to other creative writers and students around the world. He is also passionate about visiting and learning from other cultures and his web site also features many fascinating photos from his extensive travels around the world.

Now my peeps, I asked Scott to tell us a little more about himself… and this is what he decided to share with us… Plus a few of his poems, found below… he left it up to me to decide which of his works to include in this post… but I have always believed that a poem can mean many different things to varying people… each reader will put a different picture to the words… some will dislike a poem loved by dozens, and dozens my love a poem detested by millions… therefore I decided to include each of the poems provided by Scott, and I will let you guys decide… but this means that this post will be longer than most… about as long as the posts that include my book excerpts… anywho… I hope everyone finds one or two poems that you enjoy so much you read it over and over… 😛

Scott says:

“I feel blessed to be living and writing full-time at home in the glorious Hertfordshire countryside, only a thirty minute commuter ride from London. My poetry looks to positively explore human potential, with an emphasis on love, spiritual growth and self awareness. It is very important to me that my work remains as open, accessible and as simply expressed as possible. My influences vary from the great traditional English visionary romantics like Keats, Coleridge & Blake, then on to Gibran, Rilke & Eliot and then through to the distillation of thought and leanness of expression offered by the Japanese haiku tradition and later technical breakthroughs achieved in the 1970’s by leading Scottish concrete poets Ian Hamilton Finlay and Edwin Morgan.

I am also fortunate to have a smallish study all to myself, up in the loft at the top of my house, which looks out over open fields and a tree-lined skyline. Here I have quiet, cocooned space overlooking the English countryside (almost in the clouds…) and absolutely everything I need. Far, far away from anything else – phones, computers, tablets and door bells, especially…

For me, as a full time writer, a fairly rigorous, almost monastic daily routine is very important and underpins all my efforts. Not just in creating an exterior environment that is conducive to a concentrated and undisturbed focus on my craft – but one that also allows important preparatory time of an almost religious nature – given the spiritual themes that run through my work.

On a normal day, this would involve around two hours of advance preparation: morning exercise (normally running in the countryside and/or rowing) followed by breathing exercises, body stretches and meditation, sometimes some music also – before even beginning to think about any writing…

Having also eaten simply, I then would normally write in silence for between two to four hours – losing any sense of time, till my body tells me it is time to refuel. Immediately after lunch, I would then have a shorter 1-2 hour session (often the most exciting time of the day when earlier writing can begin to coalesce) Evenings are then usually important down-time from what is a quite an intense and tiring process. However I would still normally have a couple of short sessions early, right after my evening meal and also last thing before bed – which are more about reviewing existing work and quick, little polishing sessions – looking afresh and anew at whatever has emerged that day.

For me, it’s very important that every day (whether a writing day or not) begins and ends with me quietly reading through my last half a dozen pieces – in order hopefully to stay ‘in the flow’ and ‘in the voice’, clinging on tightly to that ‘silken thread’ that, once it slips from your grasp, can often be so hard to regain! Unless I’m away travelling or have specific social commitments, then EVERY day is a writing day.

I also have three identical and rather wonderful little digital voice recorders that literally go everywhere with me (one stays by the bed) so that, whatever I’m up to… I have some chance of capturing all those amazing little thoughts and insights that come to you, just out the blue – and as if by magic! Usually when you are in the throws of just doing something else, entirely – or just surfacing from sleep, for example. Previously so, so much would previously just get lost in the ether forever, before I started to do this and built it into my daily resources and routine.

All my life (and for reasons I can’t quite be sure of) I have always been a seeker in the spiritual sense and always very ambitious to live life to the full. Whenever I am blessed with special moments or insights in my life, then my first instinct is to share the light and energy that comes from this experience with others. I am particularly keen to reach younger readers and students, still at a formative time in their lives and am always especially gratified when this group of readers in particular is touched by my work.

I suppose, at the core of my creative effort, is an attempt to try and present and illuminate a runway ahead, if you like… Fed directly by my own being and experience – in the hope that it resonates. My personal mode of doing this is, of course, as an writer, artist and as a poet in particular.”

Some of Scott’s poems:

Graced

Graced with the chance

To be here,

Even if only fleetingly,

Embrace

Whatever comes your way

And, in so doing,

However enchanting

Any treasures

You uncover might be,

Their loss

Should never be your concern.

In this matter

Make your heart your queen

And follow her as faithfully

And bravely as you are able,

Just as swelling fruit

Hurries

Towards its own sweetness,

Shine whilst you can

Without fear,

For nothing is as inevitable

As it seems here.

No, not even the fissures

Of loss and decay

We are oft led to expect

In this temporal world.

Such is true joy’s

Absolute certainty.

Its slow-lit fuse

That burns holes

In the shabby shroud

Of death forever.

The Day is done

The day is done

And no one is immune,

It’s true.

That sense of a voyage

Slips seamlessly past,

Though there is a beginning;

An end to everything.

And yet a sense of connection,

Some bejewelled purpose too.

Like the child

Whose way ahead

You’ve already lit,

Or the lover you’ve yet to meet.

Many such moments

Come and go, as they must,

Melting away

Into the space we are given.

But what endures for me

Is a persistent resonance,

Some heady wish

For access again

To a sense of wonder

In the stream of things,

That, this time round,

It might just be possible

To keep in my heart

A little longer.

So tarry with me awhile

And we will see

What we can do

To tenderly explore

Beneath the frail shell

Of all we’ve since become.

Trusting that,

Maybe within

Such smoothly sculpted casing,

And still delicately enclosed,

Might just lie the silky lustre

Of some lavish

And joyful communion,

Waiting for its chance

To grip

And catch the light again.

Here I am

Here I am,

As if to confound myself,

Just as I ever was.

Seemingly little more

Than an excited dervish,

Forever chasing shadows,

Knowing that,

Come what may,

Beauty will continue

To throng around me,

Till I am no more.

What was it I never told you?

For isn’t it true that,

Without fear,

We are capable of anything…

The smell of fresh rain,

Like gunpowder on the lawn,

Embellishes the day,

As the summer rips on.

And we can but wonder

As, flawless,

Early morning moisture,

Stranded on a leaf,

Glints in the sunshine.

The world watches

And waits for us, it seems…

As if to suggest tis best

To have an unquiet response

To the nature of things.

So drink deep of your sorrows,

Drink deep of your joy

And then love

And live restlessly

For as long

As the charged ache

In your spirit allows.

Despite what we imagine

Despite what we imagine

In our sometime pain,

Beset

Either by aching anticipation

Or subsequent loss,

Lovers are never found by chance.

So tell that to the trees,

Who’ve seen it all

Countless times before

And can only stand apart

In the meadow of life

And wait

For us to dream again,

Like some broken hearted waif

On a grimy street,

For whom only the predatory

Are likely to stop.

For not even fool’s comfort

Can cling on there

To inhibit notes of caution

That would otherwise

Trim our wings,

Spoil any such dividend.

And so much more too!

Seems like

We always had this coming.

Our needs, till met,

Like rising sap,

Like clotted pollen in the air.

As it always is

In beauty’s sweet surrender,

Desire is the irresistible pull

That draws us steadily

Onto one another

And then fruits.

You were in me all along.

There’s an intricate chain

There is an intricate chain

At work here,

From one fleeting moment

Of grace to another.

A myriad of links,

Far too long and interlaced,

Even within one

Tentative soul’s journey,

To fathom.

And so the challenge

Is a simple one,

To keep

Bringing light to bear.

And to do so

With all the good faith

One can muster,

Till some chinks appear.

A fateful knock at your door

That will surely come again.

The choice then

Will always be a stark one;

Between surrender of sorts,

Or recourse to hollow dreams,

Long since eclipsed by time.

Our conjoined instincts,

Like sexual fire,

Come and go.

But that’s the way of things.

Forever in the background

A persistent, elemental energy

That didn’t ask to be here,

Just is…

And when it bursts forth

Tis a wonderfully furious thing.

As we toil and spin

As we toil and spin,

Pause and gather in

The stillness,

Whenever you are able.

Trusting that,

Time after time,

This might bind

Ever deeper

In your soul

And, one day,

Come gloriously to bear.

Otherwise how vain

A deceit is distraction,

Leaking into everything

To spoil our chances.

And, in so doing,

Look how we fashion

Instead a raw

And unnecessarily restless

Sadness in our hearts.

For it is what it is,

This life,

No more and no less…

And everyday

It shines upon us

With a patience

That is inestimable.

So take heart from this

And simply surrender

In moments,

As best you can,

Even if only in modest ripples

That gently caress

The shore of your dreams.

Life collects

Life collects,

Pools around you.

It paints its highlights.

Nothing there

You can destroy

Or begin again.

Calm in aquamarine beauty,

Barely a hint

Of surf’s snowy trim.

Today the sea is out

But will come again.

For the moment,

On the beach,

My love and I,

Naked and blissful

As can be.

In the soft,

Sun baked sand

History

Between my toes.

Sense how

Even the smooth stones

Ache

With stories of their own

In the shuddering

Light of day.

Whenever you can

Whenever you can conjure

The stillness to notice,

There is

A sense of the ancient

Hanging in the air.

A lingering spiritual fragrance,

Full of knowing,

That dresses

Contemporary journeys

Like ours.

And always set against

Such a broad tapestry,

Long woven too

With telling details

That confirm who we are,

Albeit still as raw

And naive as any infant.

All the more so

When stood, toe to toe,

With the luminosity

Of days gone by.

And embarking, as best we can,

On the benevolent opportunity

Of one thin slice

Of a chosen life,

However glorious,

Or loaded with pathos

This eventually becomes.

No chance of tragedy

Here though!

For we truly are,

As we come to recognise

Ourselves to be,

Mere receptacles.

Gilded chariots

That our spirits ride out,

But for a hallowed moment in time.

The merest splash of presence

In the serried halls of wonder.

EXCERPT

“Don’t you need to go, Holly Jacobs?” Even the way he murmured my name was sexy. This was crazy. Add that to my track record of bad decisions and getting involved with Zack was dumb on an epic level. I was incapable of having a no-strings fling. For me, it was all or nothing, and this time I was going to make the sane decision.

“Why don’t you call me just Holly?” Asking him another question was harmless.

I saw a flash of white teeth in the darkness. “I like your name.” He sounded amused. “Is that okay, Just-Holly?”

Dear God. In the middle of his grief and distress, he still had a sense of humor. I really needed to escape before I found any more reasons to linger. But I didn’t move an inch.

“You sure you don’t want to come back to my place?” His whisper reverberated through me, turning my spine liquid and my knees to jelly. He shifted position slightly and I felt him trailing a hand up my back, the fingertips tiptoeing with excruciating slowness and precision.

“Zack, I don’t do one-night stands.”

“I’m here for two nights.”

Just a quick up date… I decided to give a few online book clubs a try… I decided to go with #RRBC Rave Reviews Book Club, and OnlineBookClub.org  … it has only been a few days, but I have already meet some lovely people… Writers & Readers alike… 😛

Michelle Abbott from over at #RRBC even introduced me to a blog hop that I will be doing in the months of Feb and March… if you see #EggcerptExchange in the subject line, you will know that my usual dose of insanity will be coupled with the introduction of an author I have meet while hopping around… Annnndddd …

In the book front, I have some good news/ bad news… (well for me, not so much everyone else) I realized that the title Twin Findings would be perfect for book three of the Finder’s Keepers series… which means I now have to decide on another purrrrfect title for book two… grr….

Author Love/ Anne E Johnson

Howdy… okay… so I am all about it when it comes to supporting my fellow writers… but is this is even better than mere support… pivotal even… muhahahaha… parents this is your chance to prepare the next generation… it is your responsibility to brainwash the young’uns into loving paranormal and fantasy… yep… it is a must…

Okay… I’m done being silly… but truthfully… there were some of my favorites (these types of stories) when I was a kid… mamaw would always read to me (dyslexic here… I so wasn’t doing it myself) she had all the Disney classics, bible stories for kids, and ghost stories… if I had a little one, I would definitely read these stories for him/her at night… it is one of my favorite childhood memories…

THE CRUSTY-HEARTED MAN
(Excerpt from Story No. 15 in Things from Other Worlds)

Outside our town, a few miles from where Jimbo’s gas station used to be, an old man lived all by himself. Everybody knew he was there, but nobody actually knew him. He’d show up a few times a year to buy canned goods at Ruth & Bobby’s, but that was it. Not a soul, not even the oldest soul in town, could remember a time when that man hadn’t been around. He must have been two hundred years old. Some said more like three hundred.

Truth was, he’d been out of touch with people for so long that nobody could remember his name.

He couldn’t even remember his own name. Folks said that a crust had grown over his heart.
The heart’s a funny organ, though. It’s tougher than you’d think, and can survive through pretty much anything. It’s like a tulip bulb. No matter how icy and long the winter is, that little bulb stays alive under the frozen ground until it’s time to shoot up a new sprout, green and full of life.

But for some especially frosty people, there’s rarely enough sunshine to wake up their hearts. It takes something spectacular, maybe even something from another world. I’ll tell you what happened to this old, old man, and you’ll see what I mean.

Nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. Flies and grubs and spiders occasionally tiptoed into the walls of his house, but most were never heard from again. The younger raccoons and rabbits only touched his front stoop on a dare because their parents warned them not to.

“Get away!” the old man would scream hoarsely while shaking a frying pan above his head.

Every living creature, from human on down to bedbug, knew enough to keep off the old man’s property. But that knowledge had not been broadcast across space. So, when an alien landed in a clearing in the woods one late winter afternoon, it didn’t realize what it was up against. It was scared and a little woozy after a rough landing, although it wasn’t afraid. It had been brought up to assume that all beings will do right by each other when given the chance. Poor little thing.

I bet you think an alien is a spindly sort that looks like it’s made of green plastic. Well, not this one. It was furry. Oh, so furry. Picture fur as thick as a polar bear’s and as soft as a mink’s. Now double how thick and soft it is. Now color it blue-green. This deep, soft, dark fur was all over its body, which was short and wide. The alien, standing, came up just past your knees, but was too wide to get your arms around.

It had two giant tangerine-orange toenails on each of its four feet. Its eyes, too, were the color of tangerines, but twice as big. They were very close together in its head, and surrounded by fur, giving it a very intense look. Your average human would probably describe this alien as “the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” and make a sound that went something like “Awwww.”

Well, this little alien was in need of shelter and food. It didn’t know the plants and animals of our planet, so it shuffled right by some perfectly edible berries and nuts. But it recognized a building when it saw one. And so it approached the old man’s house in the middle of the woods, with hope in its heart but nothing in its belly.

“MMMnnnyonggg,” it called out from the yard. Nothing stirred in the house, but several woodchucks and foxes gathered to watch from a safe distance. The alien trundled up the front steps. Once it caught its fur on the rotting wood, but freed itself like a real trooper.
Inside the house, the old man heard a nasal howl.

“MMMnnnyonggg!”

He assumed it was a wolf or an injured bear. “Durn thing’s up on the porch,” said the crusty-hearted man as he pulled his frying pan down from its nail. “I’ll teach ʼem whose house this is.”

The old man shoved the front door open so hard it smacked against the rotten siding. A few shingles crumbled and fell. The woodland creatures watching the show skittered deeper into the shadows, fearing what would come next.

But the alien didn’t move. It didn’t know it was supposed to be afraid of the sound of wood smacking wood, or the sight of a two-legged earthling holding a round metal object. It assumed this was either a way to say “hello,” or else a communication device telling the whole planet about its arrival. Those were the only options that made sense to the alien. Widening its eyes and puffing up its fur, it tried to look as friendly as possible.

For his part, the old man was so puzzled that he forgot to swing the pan. “You’re not a bear,” he accused the blue-green furry thing. “You’re sure not a wolf. What are you? Gorilla?”

The alien didn’t know what the word “gorilla” meant, but it enjoyed the sound, so it waddled a little closer to the cool-talking human.

“GGgggrrrrill,” said the alien, trying to fit in.

The old man just snorted and slammed the door, leaving the alien alone on the porch.

Daniela “Dani” Celinho had a happy childhood in her family of shifters, until a deliberate act against her as a teenager leaves her with a limp, and unable to continue competing as a swimmer. Later on, after her father is murdered, her mother and sister both fall apart. Dani decides to make a life for herself, in a little town called Pepper Valley, Colorado.

One day, Griffin’s best friend talks him into having a beer at his sworn enemy’s place, Great Scott’s Bar & Grill. After a short run-in with “Great Scott” himself, Griffin’s friend distracts him by pointing out a brunette beauty standing at the jukebox. One look at her takes Griffin’s breath away.
Dani looks past the wheelchair and sees the strong handsome man with long dark hair and black tattoos. Their physical desire leads to a quick mating.

Can Dani heal not only Griffin’s body, but his soul as well?

EXCERPT

She watched him strongarm himself of out the wheelchair and onto the couch. She quickly sat down beside him, placing the beer bottle aside, and shifted her body toward his. She breathed in the scent of him. His smell was so unique: the earthy scent of the woods, and all man. One of those manly men who could fix an engine motor, and then tell a woman exactly what he wanted done to him in bed.

“What are you doing here, Dani? With me?” His eyes seemed to stare through her, as though he could hear her thoughts.

“I think you’re hot, Griffin.” Is he blushing? She felt a grin tug at the sides of her mouth.

“And I want to fuck you until you don’t remember your own name.” His eyes lowered as he looked at her lips. “But that doesn’t explain what you’re doing here. Did someone put you up to this, or do you get off on handicapped men?”

“Neither of those. Let’s explore that first suggestion of me forgetting my name.” She met those incredible hazel eyes of his.

One large hand grabbed the back of her head and yanked her forward, then his lips were on hers. Her mouth opened and his tongue met hers. He didn’t bother with a polite probing, he conquered her mouth, angling his head sideways to go deeper. Her body recognized the taste of him before her mind did. At 48 years old, she had found her mate.

AUTHOR BIO

Hi! I’m a New York Times Bestselling author from the Midwestern United States. I’m an avid reader of anything romance! I’ve worked as a travel agent, nursing assistant, and a paralegal before chasing my dream of full-time writing. I love to travel, swim, cook, and I’m more than a little addicted to a certain social media website…

Currently, I write paranormal and science-fiction romance. My plan is to branch out in several romance sub-genres, but my books will always end in the infamous happily ever after.

Always hot, always sexy, my male characters will protect their women at all costs, and my female characters will be… I like to call it “feisty.” I believe every story and character should be unique, and it’s something I always strive to do.

Reading should be an escape from everyday life, so I hope you enjoy my version of a vacation for you!

Fun facts about me:

1. I love birds! I have one (a parakeet).
2. I’m double-jointed, which led to teasing as a kid (which I also found funny)!
3. I have a shoe addiction! Mainly embellished flip-flops, but other kinds too (not heels, I’d break my ankles).
4. I missed a college 4.0 GPA in the very last semester when one professor gave me a B (still upset about that!)!
5. I am very OCD about certain things (see #6).
6. I have an extensive DVD/Blu-ray collection and it has to be kept in alphabetical order!
7. My favorite vacations involve a cruise. I’ve been on 15 so far!
8. I’m quiet and sort of shy until I get to know a person.
9. I’m quick witted and believe sarcasm is my best friend.
10. I hate hot weather.

EXCERPT

Every sense I possessed switched to Derrick after the back of my legs bumped the mattress and box spring. The way he talked, moved, smelled, tasted, felt. He was imposing physically yes, but it was so much more than his physical presence. He was slowly making me feel like a sexy woman again. I hadn’t felt attractive for close to twenty years.

“It’s been a very long time for me,” I told him on a soft breath out as he kissed the spot where one thin strap had dug a slight groove into my shoulder.

“I don’t believe that,” he replied, moving the other strap off my shoulder with a soft flick of his finger. “I don’t believe the men you know are so stupid. You’re so beautiful.”

“Well, maybe they are…God.” I shuddered so violently I couldn’t speak when he unzipped my dress. It slid downward, getting caught on my arms where they were wound around him. “I don’t—yes, just please…okay, that’s so nice.”

His mouth had moved over my neck as his hands caressed my arms. I lowered my arms from his waist and the golden creation slid off over my wrists. I stepped out of the sequined puddle with his help.

Finder’s Keepers Series…

51n5v9khhel-_sx331_bo1204203200_1

I will do my best to give book updates ever first week of the month…

As of right now, Book Two in the Finder’s Keepers series is almost ready for beta readers… very exciting, but first I would like to have another look through… woo who … and I am vacillating between two titles.. Twin Finds or Doubled Findings… but that could all change… 😛

Check out Vivian Lane

Vivian Lane was kind enough to stop by and answer a few author interview questions for us… so sit back and learn a little more about Vivian… and get ready for Protector, out the first of the year…

1. Do you have a favorite book baby?
A future Agent Seven book that hasn’t been released, yet. Writing it got me through some tough times. When nothing else was coming to me, I could work on that.
2. Which series flows so much easier that you find yourself telling the voices that they must give the other series some air time?
Well, the first drafts of several Children of Ossiria stories have been written a long time and publishing them in 2016 is my priority.
3.Do you have any writing quirks that you are willing to share? (like I have a tendency to write long hand then move to the computer, just something that frees your mind to think and connect the dots)
I need quiet to write. The quiet hum of my computer or the AC is fine, but anything else is totally distracting, which means much of my writing has happened in the middle of the night. I’ve lived more vampire hours as a writer than not!
4. Do you enjoy creating anything other than your word babies?
I recently took up drawing/sketching. I post finished projects on Facebook. I’ve tried out most any craft over the years. I can crochet and cross stitch. I don’t have a sewing machine anymore, but I used to sew. I’ve painted simple projects in the past. Just about anything you can pick up from a Michael’s store, I’ve probably tried it. I like working with my hands.
5. Where does your love of supernatural/paranormal/fantasy come from? Or is it something that has always been with you?
Always, as far back as I can remember. Sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, all that stuff. My parents were geeks.
6. You have been drafted to compete in a triathlon, with the option to ask one of your characters to take your place. Which of them would step up, and who would run screaming? Which one would you ask first, and why?
Agent Seven, Della, would probably do it if I asked nicely. The vampires can’t because of that whole pesky sunlight issue. Carys, from PROTECTOR, would say no way. She’s not into marathon exercise.
7. What would you suggest to other writers when it comes to participating in a writing community? What are your hard and fast rules?
Communities all vary, so if you join up, observe for a while before jumping in. Helps prevent stepping on any toes. Follow the rules set by the group. Contribute help where you can.
8. Do you have any co-authors? Human or of the four legged variety?
No. And my cat isn’t allowed on my desk. Otherwise, my keyboard would’ve stopped working a long time ago!
9. How do you deal with writer’s doubt?
Talk (whine) to my closest peeps. Give myself a break. Know it’s normal and everyone has it. Distract myself with something fun. Someone with zero doubts is delusional. The best books of all time still get low reviews, so….
10. Late at night, you’re walking down an alley in the worst part of town. What villain, either yours or from someone else’s book, would you hate to run into?
Juliet from STRANGE ALLIES and Nicholae from SAVING CHARLOTTE. My vampire William before PROTECTOR. Any of the Red Court or Black Court vamps from The Dresden Files…..every villain from The Dresden Files, actually.

Excerpt 1:

Carys, next time someone asks you to go with them to the middle of nowhere, say no.

My old professor asked me to come along on a trip to study native music. He was cataloging the songs of an obscure tribe. I had nothing more important to do, so I said sure. Got all the necessary shots and documents, and we made the long journey down.

Little did I know, it would be a life changing experience.

Our destination was a small village in the heart of the South American jungle. How he ever heard of them, I didn’t know. Took us three days by boat to get there. Our team consisted of the professor, our guide/interpreter, the professor’s assistant who was using this trip as info for his thesis, and me. As a music therapist, I used music to heal people’s souls, so I would be lending my expertise in the emotional resonance of the songs.

Approximately fifty people lived in the village, some of the nicest people I’d ever met, instantly welcoming and glad to share their musical history. My job was recording the performances with the handheld camera. They kept staring at me when they thought I wasn’t looking. At first, I attributed it to them never seeing a fair-skinned woman before, but the stares continued through the week.

That should have been my first clue.

Los Angeles cityscape

Excerpt 2:

A month later, it was my first day out doing something normal—shopping at the mall. Up to now, I’d avoided crowds, doing my grocery shopping when the stores were almost deserted. Walking to my car in the parking garage, my hands were full of bags, and a man walked behind me. At first, I didn’t think of hearing someone behind me, until his footsteps sped up to get close to me. He demanded my purse. I was willing to cooperate since I didn’t want to provoke him. Better my stuff than my life, right? That’s what the police tell you to do. So, I set down the bags, and the guy lunged for my purse.

I can’t tell you how I did what happened next.

Next thing I knew, I had the guy in a choke hold with claws pressed to his neck. Claws! The guy started freaking out, then, begging me not to hurt him. I tightened the hold until he blacked out, then called 911 on my cell phone. The police arrived, took my statement and the mugger, and I went home.

Shaking.

My fingernails turned into claws. That was NOT normal. Both hands? I stared at my left. Yep, both hands. Oh God.

And then the fight moves. What was that? This wasn’t The Matrix. I hadn’t been plugged into a machine for a kung fu download. Had I? What really happened in that village?
